hardships. Schools must put in place some version of guidance or help as to where to get professional help. One in seventeen people live with a serious mental illness.
This includes not only GISD students but their families as well. School should be a safe environment for students that have to deal with mental illnesses at home. They should be comfortable sharing their home life struggles with a counselor or some type of support group. If there is no safe outlet for students to confide in at school, they will most likely have no way to communicate their hardships anywhere else. It is crucial that GISD cares enough for their students to help them cope with some struggles outside of their academic career. Many students in GISD suffer from mental illness, so it is important to put in place policies that can help their individual needs. The district needs to be considerate of the fact that the scrutinizing workload high school brings may not be easily doable for people with mental illnesses. They may require special needs that they may not feel comfortable asking for in the typical school environment. All students should be aware of the options they have to help them out in special situations, whether they need mental health help or not. It is important that students can feel safe while striving towards their academic goals. A program that will help students with mental health issues would be tremendously useful for those who need it, which may be more than you think. I ask you to consider my request and to help this program be put in place by using your position to influence the board. I believe that every student should have access to what ever they need to be successful and that this is one of those
