Below average general intellectual functioning and poor adaptive behavior are the two main criteria for diagnosis of mental retardation. A low IQ score and difficulty in areas like communication or self-direction are additional criteria. These symptoms must also appear before the individual becomes 18 for a diagnosis of mental retardation (Comer, 2005).…

Learning disability A child or young person might have a mild, moderate or severe learning disability, which will affect the amount of support they need in their day-to-day life. Children with a learning disability find it harder than others to learn, understand and communicate. Children with profound and multiple learning disabilities need full-time help with every part of their lives. It is important to understand that a learning disability is not a mental illness.…

A child who has learning difficulties can be affected in many ways including emotional/intellectually/socially depending on diagnosis. These children need to be encouraged to develop to the best of their abilities; help should always be sought from professionals. These learning difficulties maybe because of birth difficulties, genetic disease, or they may just have difficulties…
Before birth things can happen to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) that can cause a learning disability. A child can be born with a learning disability if the mother has an accident or illness while she is pregnant, or if the unborn baby develops certain genes. Genes are chemicals in our bodies that contain information about us - like how we look.…

What is Mental Retardation? Mental retardation is a condition diagnosed before age 18 that includes below-average general intellectual function, and a lack of the skills necessary for daily living. We should not sentence a mental retarded to death because there was a delay deficiency in all aspects of development. How can you punish a person if they do not have all the skill as a person without any deficiency? It is unfair to even to think about the death sentence for action he did not know he was committing. People with mental retardation can fall prey when people with greater intelligence decide to take advantage of them, and they become the involuntary tools of others. As one expert in mental retardation has noted, "Most people with mental retardation don't act alone. They are usually dependent. They are never the ringleader or the leader of a gang.” People with mental retardation may also engage in criminal behavior because of their characteristically poor impulse control, difficulty with long-term thinking, and difficulty handling stressful and emotionally loaded situations. One example is when William Smith, I.Q. 65, tried to take money from "old Dan," a friendly elderly storekeeper he had known all his life. When Dan resisted, Smith panicked and lashed out, killing him. Low logical skills and limited planning capacities mean that people who have mental retardation are more likely than people of normal intelligence to get caught if they commit crimes. As a result, they make good "fall guys" for more refined…
The debate over mental illness and homelessness has been around for years. Everyone has a view or an opinion about whether or not mental illness is related to homelessness. The fact is that most people who are mentally ill cannot do the basic things that are needed to be able to maintain a balanced life, therefore they find themselves out on the streets. Statistics show that most people who are living on the streets suffer from some type of mental illness. Some people may say that this is a life that they chose for themselves and some people may say that the mentally ill have no choice. And this is why we must do something about the problem because whether you agree or disagree the fact is every time you drive down the street or go into a store the face of the homeless is there.…
In the wake of horrific crimes like Sandy Hooks shootings, and the Aurora movie theater shooting and the countless others that have plagued the Nation America is scared and heart broken. the government and the country are frantically trying to find answer and solutions in issues like guns to prevent these unspeakable acts of violence. But even though all these men have had the weapons to achieve their acts, they have had one more characteristic that's sometimes overlooked in common, their unstable minds and serious mental illness. Mental illness with its brutal stigma and awful history seems to be overlooked in the public's eyes when looking at real problems And i believe that mental illness is important in the prevention of these crimes and also to rebuild those are riddled with the repercussions of the disease. by making treatments and mental illness research a top priority in helping those with mental illnesses and fixing the system we previously have we could be on the real road to recovery.…
An Intellectual disability, also known as mental retardation, is a term used when there are limits to a person’s ability to learn at an expected level and function in daily life. Levels of intellectual disability vary greatly in children from a very slight problem to a very severe problem. Children with intellectual disability might have a hard time letting others know their wants and needs, and taking care of themselves. Intellectual disability could cause a child to learn and develop more slowly than other children of the same age. It could take longer for a child with intellectual disability to learn to speak, walk, dress, or eat without help, and they could have trouble learning in school. Intellectual disability can be caused by a problem that starts any time before a child turns 18 years old as well as even before birth. It can be caused by injury, disease, or a problem in the brain. For many children, the cause of their intellectual disability is unknown. Some of the most common known causes of an intellectual disability like…
This can be anything from being bi-polar, having brain damage, or having a genetic defect that effects the natural growth and development of the mind. People in the past have used the term “retard” to describe a person with cognitive disabilities. This term has changed due to the use of it as a derogatory remark to a person not as smart as they are. Now they may say things like “he has a cognitive delay”, “she suffers from down syndrome”, or “he has special needs”. These terms are far less demeaning to the individuals and are much more accepted in the health…
The topic I chose to write about is Mental Health. I feel like now a day’s mental health is a BIG issue with all these people killing the innocent and themselves. Mental Health has been over looked for so long and now it’s starting its true horrific nature. We have come very far from the practices and services used 10000 years ago. Still with all the technology and medicine there a lot of people that do not get the help they need. This day in age a person is given a “happy” pill to help with their mental state but back then the way they dealt with this issue is barbaric. I am going to take you back in time and let you know on how they use to treat mental health before prescription drugs were in place.…
