The goal of merit pay is to facilitate competition by tying pay to performance; the goal I to attract high quality teachers with the incentive of higher compensation. According to Ravitch the notion that merit pay is an effective way to motivate and award teachers is wrong. Most teachers don’t like merit pay and believes it put unnecessary pressure on teachers along with taking away job security. According to Ravitch, schools that does not have tenure don’t generate better test score. Furthermore, the notion that teachers having job security will increase test school have not been proven by any schools the demolish tenure process. In fact, Ravitch believes there’s a direct correlation between nonunionized and weak unionized states with low-test grades. This may be because there is no one to advocate better work conditions and pay for teachers leading to lager class sizes, less martials, and less pay for teachers.
