Metaphor Drops Of Jupiter
Metaphor Criticism Found in Drops of Jupiter By Train.

Choose an Artifact The artifact I choose to study is the song performed by Train, called Drops of Jupiter. This song has a long list of metaphors, both straight forward and hidden within the context. There are many interpretations to the lyrics, but nevertheless, the metaphors remain. Therefore, Metaphor Criticism is the criticism I choose to analyze this artifact.
Some background on the song and band; Train was a small-town band, originally forming in San Francisco, California in 1994. They didn’t make a full band and go on tour until 1997. They are now a Grammy-award winning group, who have had three albums in the Top Ten, with four songs in the Top Twenty Hits! The band worked hard to get where they are, and it all started getting better in 2001. This is when Drops of Jupiter, the album, was released. In March, the song was a hit. By June, the song was now a RIAA- certified platinum. Then continued for 53 weeks in the Top 100! It won a Best Rock Song Grammy for Train, as well as a Best Arrangement Grammy for Paul Buckmaster (Train (band) autobiography). Buckmaster is a cello artist who has done arrangements for Elton John, David Bowie, and The Rolling Stones (Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) by Train).
Justifying Your Selection This song may have been in the early 2000’s, but to this day Drops of Jupiter is still on the radio and recognized by most ages. This was again seen on the UK Top singles chart in April 2012 after a performance on The Voice by Phil Poole (Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me) by Train). As mentioned before, it earned the band some Grammys along with a major portion of their popularity.
There are multiple meanings to the metaphors in this song. Some define the lyrics as a way to describe a happy friendship that gets blown off for a love relationship with someone else. Others define it as a girl who keeps looking for love in the wrong places. Another

Irving Layton uses metaphor in his essay. 'books have become objects of curiosity; like an atomic pile, something heard about but never seen'(p145) This sentence lets people relate with the point that author is trying to get across to the reader. The reader now has a mental reference or link to what is being described so he can now better understand what he is reading. This stylistic device is used effectively in this essay.…

The first stanza shows her loneliness when she states “I’m all alone in this world, she said “ / “Ain’t got nobody to share my bed” (1-2). She is a woman with a desire to be in love, and maybe start a family, but first she needs a man in her life. She has nobody to share her bed, means she is an unmarried woman, with no boyfriend or significant other. Her first desire is having someone to share her bed, which makes her seem desperate for a man. She is looking for someone to be her companion. She continues, “Ain’t got nobody to hold my hand— “/ “The truth of the matter’s “/ “I ain’t got no man.” (3-5)…

Sgt Pepper was probably one of the earliest examples of a concept album. It’s this overall ‘multimedia’ approach, making the music, the lyrics and the concept art link together that makes this a stunning showcase of modern rock. For the first time on a Beatles’ record, the artwork, packing and every song were connected in some way. Ironically, although connected, the music on the album was influenced by such diverse genres as music hall, jazz, rock and roll, western classical, and traditional Indian music.…

On February 14, 1983, a passionate, fierce pop-rock song was released by a man who was known as the King of Pop. “Beat It” instantly skyrocketed and was a complete success, winning two Grammy’s and holding the top spot in the Top 40 for three weeks (Whitaker). Michael Jackson, the pop and R&B star, wanted to broaden his audience and wrote “Beat It” after his producer advised him to write something like, “My Sharona,” which was a great success for The Knack in 1979 (Songfacts). Jackson’s popular tune was covered by several artists, but one particularly stood out to many rock fans. 25 years after the release of “Beat It,” Fall Out Boy and John Mayer released their rendition of the song and it hit #19 on the US charts and performed it live at…
