Metaphors in the play show that love is a powerful emotion. When Romeo is crying because he cannot see Juliet anymore while contemplating suicide, Friar Lawrence says, “Thy tears are womanish” (III.iii.115-120). Friar is saying that Romeo is acting feminine. He is also saying that his tears are women-like. In addition, Friar Lawrence is telling Romeo that he is not making the right decision by telling romeo that he is having “The unreasonable fury of a beast”
(III.iii.120-125). The Friar is saying that Romeo’s actions resemble the irrational fury of a beast. Shakespeare is comparing Romeo to a beast. Through metaphors, Shakespeare can describe a character’s actions and personality much more vividly.
Romeo and Juliet make are willing to take great risks for love. When Romeo and Juliet are done meeting after the party and she is talking to the nurse she describes how “[Her] only love sprung from [her] only hate.” (I.v.150-155). Juliet already loves Romeo even though both families are enemies. Love is making them love each other even though they were taught to have a deep hatred for each other. In addition, Romeo sneaks out to to see Juliet and he tells her that he has “Night's cloak” to hide him from “their eyes” (II.ii.80). Romeo visits Juliet at night to see her and plans to return in the future. Love guided him to do this even though he knows that talking to each other is disallowed and that they could get in a lot of trouble if they get caught. Shakespeare describes their actions that they make and imply that love is the strongest force there is.

The use of metaphors have the ability to point out how much Romeo loved Juliet. By using Romeo and Juliets actions, Shakespeare is able to show what they are willing to do for each other no matter what the consequences are.
