Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that “In 2015 violent crime rose 3.9 percent compared with 2014 rate”. ("Violent Crime".)What about the FBI report “41 law enforcement officers died as a result of felonious acts” in 2015. ("FBI Releases 2015 Statistics on Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted.")
The International Association of Police Chiefs (IACP) defines force as “the amount of effort required by police to compel compliance from unwilling subject.”(“Police Use Of Force” 1). This definition however, does not exactly define the standard or recommended force. Law enforcement is expected to protect and serve. In the process of doing their jobs unfortunately lives are placed in danger.Sometimes their decision making time is limited, but we have to agree, they have to act in order to bring order, protect others life and their lives …show more content…
We need law enforcement present and active in our communities. The communities need to feel they can trust the police officers to protect then and uphold the law justly. Initiatives such as body cams used by the police officers are a sign of good faith and police officers becoming accountable.
On the other side of the scale, the communities also have a responsibility in this conversation. What measures are they doing to curb crime in our neighborhoods? Some will argue that there are neighborhood watches and patrols that work hand in hand with law enforcement to maintain order. What about neighborhoods infested by gangs and law enforcement lack support from the community to help stop gang activities?
During the course of this research, I will need to research more about other community initiatives to help bridge the gap. Another issue that is of interest and will require further research is qualified immunity and its application. Researching about recent cases that have been tried in the courts and the rulings will be an important part of my research. My quest is to further explore measures and findings of the task forces that have been set up in the different precincts to find solutions to make police officer
