A lot of evidence and claims have been brought up by citizens saying that police officers have taken wrong actions while in pursuit of a citizen. This evidence has put tension between citizens and law enforcement. The Mayor of New York City is providing New York’s police department with body cameras saying they would, “increase accountability and transparency at a time when tension is growing between communities and local police departments” (Santora and Stewart). …show more content…
NYC Police Commissioner -William J.
Bratton, an advocate of body cameras, talks about how he has been interested in the body cameras for quite a long time. He thinks that if something like the Michael Brown and Eric Garner case happen again the body cameras would give everyone a clearer picture of what happened. The Eric Garner case was caught on camera by a bystander, but the video didn’t show what initially made the police officer put Garner in a chokehold (Grovum). The cases both about police officers killing unarmed men brought about many dangerous riots.
With the use of body cameras, the tension between the police officers and the citizens will begin to loosen up. Body cameras will give a more clear picture of what the police see from their point of view and why they acted the way they did. They will also show the wrongful things some police officers are doing to certain people. The Mayor, Mr. De Blasio, states that the use of body cameras will give the police officers a, “real sense of transparency and accountability.” (Santora and
Stewart)
People who disagree with the body cameras will bring up that the cameras cost to much and the money used on cameras should be used on different things, but if they use some of the money from traffic violations the money will not come fully from the federal money (Grovum). People also say the more they use the camera's storage, the more money they will use for storage, but having the body cameras will lessen the amount of money the city will have to pay on claims that come from citizens.
After close research, police officers need to have body cameras to clear up wrongful actions, get a clearer picture of what happens, and to show the good deeds of officers to loosen tension between citizens and police.
