Last week I visited the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in the big apple. I wasn’t sure how it was going to be like since it was my first time going there. The museum was enormous with lots of art works from different locations around the world. My main focus was the Japanese arts, which was very fascinating. As I explored the room with the Japanese arts, I’ve stumbled upon a Buddha like figure sitting right beyond the door of the room. It was called Kaikei, Fudo Myoo from the early 13th century which was found on the right side of the figure. One thing that stood out to me was its facial expression. I’m guessing the crafter that created it made the figure angry and serious looking in order to show its authority or that it’s an important …show more content…
I didn’t expect it to have such proportioned and symmetric shapes. The idol had peaked eyebrows and globular shaped nose, the reason for his peaked eyebrows were most likely because of the emotion the artist was intending to show. When we get angry or feel any other types of emotion we tend to have different facial expressions which give a clue to others how we are feeling. The sculpture had its right hand on a very on a pointy vertical sword facing towards the ceiling. The left hand was holding a small piece of rope with a ring on one end and a whistle like object on the other end. From how it was holding the objects it seems like the figure was a warrior, ordinarily people wouldn’t be holding such objects. As I look closer towards the body textures, there’s curvy lines’ coming down from top to bottom of the idol on its left shoulder. It resembles robes people used to wear back then, the right side was exposed there were no robe. Maybe it’s made to cover only one side and the chest to bottom. The head part of the figure was interesting; it had long ears with holes towards the bottom. Near the left ear was a long strand of hair tied up with seven strings, the hair part had circular shape which can mean the person had long hair. The top of the head resembles a mushroom which kind of stands
