metropolitan reflections in the short stories of amyhempel
Chapter No: 1 INTRODUCTION
Amy Hempel is an American short story writer, journalist and contributing editor of The Alaska Quarterly Review. She had written four volumes of short stories which are entitled as: At the Gates of Animal Kingdom, Tumble Home, Reasons to Live and Dog of the Marriages. Amy Hempel was ranked among those American writers who secured an international literary stature. Her literary contributions are indeed highly significant. Her book The Collected Stories is considered as the best book by New York Times. Her eloquent prose style has given her country the symbols to recognize the problems of their area. Her literary style has served as a model for subsequent American writers.
The researcher aims at exploring the “contemporary reflections” in the short stories of Amy Hempel, for it contains all the short stories in a single book known as The Collected Stories. Contemporary reflections include all the chaotic issues rising in the existing modern societies. Contemporary reflections and metropolitan theory are the two non identical terms for an identical phenomenon. The term metropolitan theory refers to all the problems which are existing in all the metropolitan areas of the present age. This theory includes all the problems like increase in crime rate, drug addiction, illegal relationships, abortions, lack of human rights and values and lack of awareness and education. Metropolitan areas are those areas which consists of densely populated urban core. So metropolitan theory highlights all the problems which are rising because of the dense population of the area. This metropolitan theory can be easily implemented on Amy Hempel’s short stories.
Short story merely belongs to the genre of fiction in which written narratives are comparatively not much lengthy and they can be easily finished only in one single sitting. Generally compared to drama, short

A major decision that all adults will face is deciding if it better for them to rent or own their residence. I am going to show it is far more cost effective to live in a rental property rather than owning a property. The average cost of living in a rental property is far less than living in property that is owned. The comparison in the cost of rent versus the cost of a mortgage combined with the extra expenses of owning a home will show the basic savings a person will incur when renting his or her residence. There are other benefits that renters have over owners, the amenities that cost extra as a home owner. With these facts exposed, there is a clear understanding of why it is a better option to rent than own.…

Pane Baths, as described by Cuéllar on pages 15 and 16, are “one of the several spas in Mexico City popular among the middle class”. The mothers of three girls invited to the ball needed these baths because it was hydrotherapeutic and improved their health bit by bit. The girls came back wearing a towel to contain their damp, curly hair, which was always held in place by a blue ribbon. As quoted by Cuéllar on page 15, “They smelled like naiads and emanated the essence of algae; and the freshness of their skin announced the voluptuousness of their personal care.” Girls were fresh and clean from these baths. “Their epidermis had been cleansed of secretions, and their pores felt as though kissed by oxygenated air” (Cuéllar, page 16). Pane baths was the main key to proper personal hygiene and…

Ian Frazier is popular American satirist. One of his articles posted in “The New Yorker” called “How to operate the shower curtain”. In this article he talks about how to use the simplest thing we could imagine, the shower curtain. The way he describes its use is very ironic and funny, explaining in every detail possible. He says, “Remember to keep the shower curtain inside the tub at all times!” as if showering was an extremely dangerous activity where you have to follow step-by-step instructions (Frazier 1). Not only does he talk about the curtain itself, but also objects associated with showering such as shampoo bottles or even activities you have to perform…

David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” is a commencement speech to a group of graduating college seniors, telling them the harsh truth about life as an adult American. He utilizes this piece to ponder the problem of how and why we as humans view the world in the way we do, regarding our specific viewpoints and respective realities. He thinks upon this problem by analyzing the human psyche’s “default-setting” of being self-absorbed, and how by “learning how to think”, this cycle can be broken, using a commonplace example of a long day of work followed by a trip to the grocery store to showcase how all of us focus upon ourselves and our own intentions (3, 2). He ends up concluding that to live a common American life is “unimaginably hard”, and how we perceive this life and the world around us is what will grant us “awareness of what is real and essential” as we live it (8).…

In the novel, House of Sand and Fog, the author Andre Dubus develops the idea that individuals are constantly struggling to balance their external and internal demands. The Most common external demands that individuals have is the desire to achieve a loving marriage, own a home, have a decent job that provides respect, to be financially stable and to be proud of oneself, within family and community. On the other hand, the most common internal demands are to have happiness, love and strength to cope with problems that arise in life. The main idea that connects the three characters in the novel is their drive to achieve comfort and personal well-being. They desire home, family and security but their choices led to disaster and a tragedy. The title house of sand and fog foreshadows the turmoil that will take place because fog symbolizes confusion and the potential danger as it causes to lose sense of direction and causes a lack of clarity which leads to wrong choices which will eventually result in a disaster. Sand is found under the sea, and goes from one place to another because it doesn't have one fixed place just like how there is no fixed owner of the house as it changes with time. Sand is very irritating and abrasive in texture and this relates to how the house causes irritation and discomfort to the character. House symbolises a place that provides protection to human beings and keeps family united. We can clearly understand that if a house is of sand and fog; the house will not provide protection in fact it will give the opposite to the people that live in it because sand can be seen as something that is not united because it is in pieces, just like how the character in the family don't relate to one another and are drifted apart by their lack of confusion which is caused by their mental “fogginess”. Human beings have complete potential to pursue their personal well being by maintaining a balance between their internal and external demands.…

This is shown when Saeed and Nadia are at Mykonos and instead of complaining about their needs and suffering because of the limited resources, they admired their surroundings as though they were vacationing, this helped them forget about their problems for a moment. In the story, Saeed and Nadia are losing faith in finding another door, and what keeps them motivated is treating the refugee camp as a vacation. Hamid writes, “Days passed like this, full of waiting and false hopes… Nadia had the idea that they should explore the island as if they were tourist...so they carried their loads like trekkers in the wilderness and walked along the beaches and up the hill.” (Hamid 113) In times of war being optimistic as a human being is really difficult, especially for Saeed and Nadia because the militants would go through the doors to attack the refugee cities, which lead the nativist to attack the migrants. Taking their small getaway “vacation” helps Saeed and Nadia leave their problems aside even if it is for a moment and helps them relax because a refugee camp is not somewhere to vacation and relax. The quote shows how even though someone may be facing a problem, there is always something positive out of it. So instead of thinking that they may die in Mykonos because they did not have many resources, they started looking at what Mykonos had, which were the views. This helped Saeed…

In this way we repair the major damage wrought by mentalism. When what a person does [is] attributed to what is going on inside him, investigation is brought to an end. Why explain the explanation? For twenty five hundred years people have been preoccupied with feelings and mental life, but only recently has any interest been shown in a more precise analysis of the role of the environment. Ignorance of that role led in the first place to mental fictions, and it has been perpetuated by the explanatory practices to which they gave rise.[18]…

Life cycle changes over time as a person grows old. He passes through different phases of life and gets opportunity to experience changing situations in life. There come situations when a person feels fortunate to have a great life whereas, all the same, situation arrives when a person is made to have worst experiences of life. He is made to feel alone, socially isolated or segregated in the society. Sometimes, there comes a situation, when the houses, which were typically considered to be large and spacious, motivate its residents to consider other housing options. My research, basically revolves around the people who choose to live in old homes. My research question is based upon their perspective about this residential segregation and the bonds they have developed within themselves in the old house. I also tend to disucuss the reasons behind choosing such an institutional living.…

“The problem that humans have is that we fetishize nature,” Kundig says. “It’s almost as if we have divorced ourselves from the fundamental idea that we are just another species on the earth that happens to be a little more clever, a little more vicious, and a little more dangerous to the earth.” The thin membrane that is this cabin is meant both to protect us from nature, then, and protect nature from us.”…

Way 2: In this way of life, the individual for the most part goes it alone, assuring himself of privacy in living quarters, having much time to himself, attempting to control his own life. Emphasis is on self-sufficiency, reflection and meditation, knowledge of oneself. Intimate associations and relationships with social groups are to be avoided, as are the physical environment. One should aim to simplify one’s external life, to moderate desires which depend on physical and social forces outside of oneself. One concentrates on refinement, clarification, and self-direction. Not much is to be gained by living outwardly. One must avoid dependence upon persons or things; the center of life should be found within oneself.…
