arrive an hour late. As a result, Tub has to face the harsh weather for an hour. This reveals
Tub’s victory in regards to the physical. He overcomes the physical by pacing the sidewalk to
keep warm (Wolff). Tub is strong in the physical sense and lives
as a result of his essence of
‘survival of the fittest’.

mental. Once Frank and Kenny arrives, Kenny plays a joke on Tub by pretending to run over
him with the truck (Wolff). Tub quickly and expertly escapes the truck’s wheels. His mind
thinks fast and acts accordingly. Furthermore, at a certain point in the short story, Kenny falls
into a pattern of declaring his resentment for something and then shooting it. He does this to a
post, a tree, and a dog (Wolff). Kenny lastly turns to Tub and as a result of Kenny’s loathing
words to him, Tub shoots at Kenny. Tub reacts faster yet once again in the mental, for he
expected Kenny to shoot him.

the relational. At the end of the short story, Frank confides in Tub about his new love. Tub
