Social classes in America have been a rising issue. Many People don’t think that social classes matter very much, they believe that you are either rich or poor: there is no real in between. Whereas there are really nine classes with top out of sight being the highest class and bottom out of sight being the lowest class. In between though there is seven other classes: upper, upper middle, middle, high proletarian, mid proletarian, low proletarian, destitute and bottom out-of-sight. This is made very clear Paul Fussell’s book Class: A Guide Trough the American Status System. Fussell makes these classes very clear and well defined. In the film Grand Canyon directed by Lawrence Kasdad, characters representing different classes come together and form relationships. The main one being the upper middle class lawyer Mack and a high prole tow truck driver Simon. The two meet and gain insight on how different classes behave and act. This gives one another a special look into another social class. The different classes expressed by Mack and Simon in the film Grand Canyon are shown by the clothing worn, Housing and job titles.…

The term ‘Hispanic’ recognizes people whose cultural ancestry lies first in Spain and then in the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America which comprises of Mexico, Central America and most of South America except Brazil, and several Caribbean nations. The term gained wide spread prominence only after the 1960s. (Jorge Iber, 2005:6). Spanish and Portuguese explorers and settlers began to arrive in America in the early 1500s. With the intermingling of different communities over the years, most of the Hispanics living in the United States are of mixed heritage. In social research, the definition of any ethnic or racial group always tends to be problematic. Although they are all referred to as a whole, the Hispanics are not a homogenous ethnic or racial group as is perceived by people across the world. The term in itself could be a suitable label for people who do not comprehend the intricacies of this varied population. Despite these romanticised notions of a common identity and political cohesion, first generation immigrants never used to identify themselves as Hispanics. They have always perceived of themselves as Cubans, Mexicans,…

Mexican Americans, Puerto Rican Americans, Cuban Americans, and Dominican Americans have separate cultures but both include strong family bonds and religious beliefs. These cultural groups are classified into the Hispanic American category because they share the Spanish language. “Although these groups share the same language each group has a different dialect and origin. Cuban and Dominican Americans have made the greatest developments in the social and political stand point. Puerto Rican Americans have made progress on the homeland in the economic view. While some groups resist assimilation into the American lifestyle, others have embraced it.” (Alba, 2006). Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Dominican Americans have many resemblances but still remain separate in their ethnicity and are descendants from a variety of immigrants. The main reason for these groups immigrating to the United States was for a safe environment free of political issues occurring in their countries and to seek a better way of life.…

I would consider my family and I to be in the working class status, which is also defined to be under as a lower-class group. My family has worked extremely hard from having absolutely nothing to something. They migrated from Mexico to the United States for better opportunities, since in Mexico there were insufficient jobs for my parents to even have a home or food. My parents first moved to Florida where I was eventually born. We then moved to North Carolina when I was about a year old. I honestly never knew there was such a thing as social classes and the meaning of it each class. Since, I can always remember my family have shared similar characteristics to that of a lower-class family.…
