When the Spanish came to the coast of Mexico, the Aztecs were the most powerful nation in the region. For many centuries earlier, advanced civilizations inhabited the country. The Olmec civilization is known for the amazing colossal heads. Of the known Mayan temples, hieroglyphs and their math. From the Aztecs are known temples and your calendar. Powerful astecas Mexico dominated the region when I Herman Cortes in 1519.
Cortes, a Spanish captain, went to Mexico in search of adventure and riches. came ashore with few ships, soldiers and sailors and tried to conquer the Aztec nation. The remote recognition of the authority of the Christian church and the Spanish king. The indidenas had no firearms and consequently many were defeated by the Spaniards. Cortes also founded the city of Veracruz.
The Indians believed the Spaniards were gods and were very afraid of their horses and guns. The emperor of the Aztec nation was called Montezuma. He was a smart man but feared their gods. Montezuma sent him gifts of gold to Cortes and asked him to leave the country. The Spaniards were filled with greed and decided to conquer that country of such wealth.
Some Spanish soldiers feared the Indians and wanted to return to Cuba. But when Cortes sank all the ships, the soldiers had no choice but to conquer or die in Mexico. Some of the indigenous nations wanted their independence from Aztec and offered their assistance to Cortes. So they formed alliances with the Spanish captain. Much of the Indians believed in the legend of Quetzalcoatl. According to the legend, there was a God who promised to return one day. The Indians believed the Spaniards descended from the god Quetzalcoatl and so feared the Spaniards a lot. The emperor Moctezuma also believed that the Spaniards were gods and so he send rich gifts hoping he will not come to the Aztec capital.
