MGMT530 – Conference Decision
Week 1 Case Analysis

1) Define the decision problem?
The decision problem at hand would be how exactly we still continue with the conference at a new location given all the surrounding circumstances due to Hurricane Katrina.

2) What is the general nature of the problem?
The general nature of the problem is that we do not currently have a conference location as we are nearing the eleventh hour due to a hurricane but last minute adjustments would risk losing users and customers because of the potential higher costs.

3) What event triggered the situation?
Hurricane Katrina triggered the situation

4) What are the imposed constraints on the situation?
There are several imposed constraints including the fact that all attendees have prepaid for attendance and if the date is changed many attendees many not attempt to attend for a second time.

5) What are the underlying elements of the problem?
The underlying elements are that the city is being destroyed by a natural disaster, but the accounting system still needs to generate positive growth/profit.

6) Describe the dependencies on other decisions?
Conference attendance is dependent upon finding a safe venue of equal value without losing a large profit from the company; company profit is dependent upon potential new customers who will attend the conference; (seeing as the conference organizers have worked with the local visitor’s bureau, thus the company is located in or near New Orleans, LA) the future of the company may be dependent upon the overall destruction of the city by this terrible storm

In most case studies there is more information than you will need. The key skill is being selective in terms of which information best supports your explanation. This doesn’t mean that the rest of the information is useless, only that based on that assignment you don’t need it. For later assignments you may have a different issue to focus on, so other information would then become relevant to you.…

Keeping cost the same is a fundamental objective in this conference decision case. If the cost of the conference rises, the conference could lose some attendees. So whatever decision is implemented has to be cost effective for the attendees and the organization. When considering a solution for this problem, we should stir clear of the ones that could potentially increase cost on the conference and the attendees. It is a possibility that some potential attendees could base their decision on whether to attend the conference or not, on increase costs.…

To communicate the information effectively from the Vice President of Communications to the team, an appropriate channel would be a face-to-face conversation. The client is new to the company and in a meeting the team will be able to discuss the parameters, deadlines, and the client. The meeting ensures the team is aware of the client’s criteria. “Face to face conversation scores the highest in channel richness because it transmits the most information” (Robbins & Judge, 2011). The appropriate channel to communicate back to the vice president can be an electronic email. The e-mail can use bullet points to sum up the team meeting, direction and goals. The vice president will be able to send check in emails at different points during the follow-up on the strategy. “E-mail messages can be quickly written, edited and stored” (Robbins & Judge, 2011). Due to a one week timeline, time spent arranging a face to face meeting would take precious time out of the short deadline.…

There are numerous reasons that cancellation of an event may be necessary. These include: Changes in the clients financial situation; issues that have arisen between the client and the venue or the venue’s affiliates; a decrease in the number of attendees meaning that it is no longer feasible to run the event; an increase in the number of attendees meaning that the venue is no longer suitable; a venue may encounter an issue which means that they are no longer capable of holding the event (therefore the event is cancelled by the venue). These are just a small number out of a myriad of reasons that I have encountered in the past. I will be concentrating on cancellations made by the client in this discussion.…

The event was planned but the timings hadn’t been specified in a way that would work well for all the groups. For example, we started off the event with the plan to move groups on every 10 minutes onto the next activity, however the needed more time than just the hour we had to be able to move through and do an activity in every group and then we also needed time to go through prizes and certificates at the end.…

Although a considerable amount of the blame has been placed at the feet of FEMA, it should be understood that multiple factors contributed to the situation in New Orleans. Some sections of the levees had been poorly constructed, and were not properly maintained. Local agencies failed to adequately plan and prepare of such an event. Local officials waited too long to order an evacuation, and did not consider how to assist those citizens who lacked the financial resources evacuate on their own. (1,24)…

    1. I do believe that Oilers rights were violated upon his termination from Win-Dixie. In no way can what Oiler did in his personal time be reflected in the actions of what others “may” do if they find out. By the Case study, it was known out in the open that oiler did in fact cross dress with going to church and other public places and has shown no negative outcomes to him performing his duties for Win-Dixie as a truck driver. It should be noticed that the court agreed that the termination was ok because there were no laws that protected transgendered individuals. Let us remember that transgender is only a more resent term used to describe individuals who dress of a different sex. In the Civil Rights Act of 1964 title VII section 2000e-2, it is written that it shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin or to limit, segregate, or classify his employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. (Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 2012). In the case study it was mentioned that the laws were too broad, but it is left broad to leave open to growth and to cover many entities. The termination of Oiler was by my view a violation of the Civil Rights Act under “sex” of an individual.…
