Most of the guys are portrayed to be family men, with significant others and children waiting for them back at home. Still, the relationship between any of the men and their respective families is explored for more than a few moments.
Essentially, 13 Hours is on the opposite side of the spectrum as others comparable films, such as American Sniper or Lone Survivor. In fact, the premise of modern warfare movies – at least when it comes to emotional connections with families, is rarely explored territory. It depicts American soldiers being pinned down in a compound, only they just so happen to possess enough firepower to defend their stronghold for a lengthy period of time. How long, you ask? The writing is on the wall (or in the title). Regardless, one could also make the case that 13 Hours needed an extra boost of star power, relying on a moderately recognizable John Krasinski to hold down the fort (so to speak). But, as previously stated, it’s not as if these characters are delved into all that much, meaning an A-list celebrity wouldn’t realistically have helped the film’s cause (though it would have been more marketable). In the end, 13 Hours is definitely a Michael Bay production, through and through. If you love his energetic, albeit chaotic style of storytelling, you should squeeze a substantial amount of entertainment out of this film, regardless of the fact that’s two and a half hours
