Carnigee steel was his newest entrepreneurial investment; at this point in time steel was a booming business due to the expansion of the industrial America and the need to expand the railroads along with it. Though it was a booming business, there wasn’t room for everyone with tyrants like U.S steel engulfing America’s steel demand. So, seeing an industrial monopoly coming, Carnigee sold his company to J.P Morgan for $480 million which rounds to about 13.2 billion in 2012.…

After he received the company from his father he renamed it to J.P Morgan Co. The ownership of J.S Morgan Co. enabled J.P Morgan to run a large foreign reserve business. Some of the railroads he owned included West Shore, Richmond Terminal, Philadelphia and Reading, the Erie, and New England railroads. In auteur theory, a term originated by film critic Andrew Sarris in his essay, "Notes on the Auteur Theory"16, there is a desire to outline the personal vision of the director. This is said to be the key instrument to understanding filmmaking. In addition, he writes the question is how does a director express personal vision? The concern is how this theory is used to examine the initial “obsessions” and “thematic preoccupations” of the director versus the original creator or author. This essentially becomes a study or attempt to outline the director's desire and/or personal statement.…
Michael Patrick MacDonald was born and raised in Southie, what he calls “the greatest place to live.” While he may have been able to look towards the bright side and find the good in Southie, this is not something that many people can do. Southie is the area with the highest concentration of impoverished whites in the United States, with eighty five percent of its residents living in extreme poverty. With sky-high crime rates and the fact that there is nowhere that will be completely safe, Southie seems a terrible place to live for outsiders. In All Souls, MacDonald provides the reader with first hand experiences, showing us what it is like to live in Southie, and what it means to call it home.…

Although considered to have an Athenian education at the University of Alabama and Hofstra University, Madoff’s intentions were focused primarily on earning money. As a result, he briefly attended Brooklyn Law School, but founded the Wall Street firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC and remained working for his own company. His company grew with the substantial amount of loans received from family, committees, and investors. The firm grew famous for its reliable annual returns of 10 percent or more. In order to compete with other firms, Madoff decided to use innovative computer information technology to disperse its quotes. The program that the firm tested and helped to develop became the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations, or NASDAQ. Madoff later served as president of the board of directors for the NASDAQ stock exchange.…
The essay by Mike Rose made me really think about the purpose of education schools have to offer us. He talks about how a basic exam can determine your whole life; it made me really think about how accurate these tests really are. The purpose of this essay seemed to be how he feels students failures isn’t because of us, its because of the school system overall. He shares how the vocational track is basically portrayed as students who are not motivated to learn. The question he makes us think about is, why are these students so unmotivated to learn? He states how for the most part the teachers are the ones who are not motivated enough to teach them. Basically the teachers have to be there because it’s their job, and from the moment of the student’s first grade the teachers automatically think that they’re UN teachable. Students believe whatever the teacher says so they start believing that their stupid and so they wont try. Later on in the book, Rose talks about Jack MacFarland. He descries him as a unique person, because even though he’s a teacher he puts work to make students understand that all teachers are not the same.…

By 2008, Bernie Madoff had grown Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities to 200 employees and commanded tremendous respect on Wall Street (Gregoriou & Lhabitant, 2009, p. 90). More than $750 million dollars of stolen funds were transferred to the market making and proprietary trading operations, keeping those portions of the business afloat. Madoff needed to support these failing portions of the business to maintain the appearance of a legitimate business operation (Lewis, 2013, pp. 283-284).
