of the safety of our own environment. Many state governments because of the environmental damage have begun putting restrictions on companies’ use of these products.
The first to do so was the state of Illinois which will put an outright ban on manufacturing with microbeads starting on January 1, 2018. The bill passed with help from activist groups and some participating companies who wanted to see change. This was huge because many of the corporations that sell to people in Illinois also sell there same products across the country laying the ground for other states to put in similar laws. Illinois also contains one of the biggest cities, Chicago, which companies can sell too. The most recent state to pass a ban on microbeads is California passing the bill just a couple months ago in early October. This was the most contested battle for the subject because California passing it would mean that a ton of smaller states would likely follow in their footsteps. The bill faced major opposition against Johnson and Johnson, and Proctor and Gamble. Their opposition caused two amendments to the bill to be deleted but fortunately it still passed and we should see some improvement in the future. Next to Illinois, California is the second biggest legislative victory because of the massive population inside of the state. There are seven other states that have banned the use of microbeads in products sold to the public. Aside from the US many of our allies have already swiftly put restrictions on the pollution of microbeads. The EU and Canada in the early stages of realization quickly put some kind of regulation on the pollutant. We are still
behind The efforts of a lot of people working towards one cause has brought rapid change to the issue. Most environmental issues take much longer to be enacted into law. Yet our work is not done. Much of our waters is still polluted with plastic and hurting the life cycle in the ocean can ultimately be detrimental to the whole earth and the human species. We need to work rapidly to not only stop the leakage of microbeads but to start filtering and cleaning them out of the water of the ocean. Fortunately if progress keeps moving at this pace we should be able to stop the microbeads crisis.
Analysis of current issues Microbeads have been used in many products for years and have been deemed safe for consumers to use but just recently did we find out the environmental impact of having these in our water ways. The thing that connects all countries together is the fact that we all share water ways. When one country pollutes the water the water can shift from all different places and the pollutants in it come with it. The efforts behind solving this problem is only effective if everybody is willing to make sacrifices to help fix the problem. The first big question to understanding the microbeads crisis is why people who create beauty products feel like they need to use them. The most obvious off the back answer is that they are far cheaper than the natural alternatives that they could use. Saving money in production can cause the profits of these companies to sky rocket. The other big reason is that many beauty experts have falsely thought that the beads can help rub off dead skin. This is not true as skin that would’ve fallen off would fall off anyways with normal pressure and skin that didn’t needs far more pressure to come off. We have done enough research to now come to the realization that not only are microbeads detrimental to the environment but they also have no positive effect in including them in daily health products.
