Analyzing Microwave Power Transmission & Solar Power Satellite Systems
Description: Microwave power transmission (MPT) involves the usage of microwaves to transmit power through outer space or the atmosphere without the need for wires. It is a sub-type of the more general wireless energy transfer methods, and is the most interesting because microwave devices offer the highest efficiency of conversion between DC-electricity and microwave radiative power. Following World War II, which saw the development of high-power microwave emitters known as cavity magnetrons, the idea of using microwaves to transmit power was researched. In 1964, William C. Brown demonstrated a miniature helicopter equipped with a combination antenna and rectifier device called a rectenna. The rectenna converted microwave power into electricity, allowing the helicopter to fly. In principle, the rectenna is capable of very high conversion efficiencies - over 90% in optimal circumstances. Most proposed MPT systems now usually include a phased array microwave transmitter. While these have lower efficiency levels they have the advantage of being electrically steered using no moving parts, and are easier to scale to the necessary levels that a practical MPT system requires. The author presents a complete analysis of the myriad uses of Microwave Power Transmission, and one of its biggest application – Solar Power Satellite Systems.     Wireless signals are all around us as we walk or drive around the city or town where we live. The four types of wireless technologies that are out there are Wi-Fi, Cellular, Bluetooth, and WiMAX. We will be looking at these types of wireless technologies a little more in depth, where are they most commonly used, and how they differ from one another. The first wireless technology that we will be looking at is the Wi-Fi wireless signal. The Wi-Fi signal is mainly associated with computer networking, the specification used to create a wireless local area network is the IEEE 802.11. One would use this type of wireless technology if you were a business owner opening up a coffee shop and needed a public network. The network would have a wired connection to an internet source, then leading to a wireless router that transmits and receives the data from all of the customer’s devices that want to use the Wi-Fi. This will also connect all of the devices to one another through the network. The next type of wireless technology that we will be looking at is Cellular. This type of wireless technology is most often associated with wireless telephones. The cellular network is connected to cells that will enable a user to move around freely while staying connected to the network. This type of signal is used everywhere you go nowadays and are used by everyone. There are a multitude of devices that use these networks at one time and those include, smart phones, tablets, and some computers can use the cell towers to get a signal to be able to use the internet. The first generation of cellular signals was completely analog, and from there with the growing demand of faster speeds and better connectivity technology brought us 2G, 3G, and the ever popular 4G phones. In the 1890's famous scientist and engineer Nikola Tesla dreamt of wireless transfer of power. He envisioned a world, in which all electricity is transferred wirelessly, but the idea was more or less abandoned and highly efficient copper cables became the basis for modern electricity infrastructure. Then, a few years ago, Marin Soljačić, an assistant professor of physics at MIT, was dragged out of bed by the insistent beeping of a cell phone. In his exhausted state, he wished the phone would just begin charging itself as soon as it was brought into the house. So, Soljačić started searching for ways to transmit power wirelessly. Soljačić found magnetic resonance a promising means of electricity transfer because magnetic fields travel freely through air yet have little effect on the environment or, at the appropriate frequencies, on living beings. Working with MIT physics professors John Joannopoulos and Peter Fisher and three students, he devised a simple setup that wirelessly powered a 60-watt light bulb.
