Middle School Snack Policy
The Lathrop R-II Middle School’s snack policy is currently that students are not allowed to eat in class. The sixth grade, first hour, Language Arts class conducted a study on the current snack policy. We created a survey for the students and teachers of Lathrop Middle School and counted snack related issues in the middle school and administration buildings (computer lab, art room, and choir room). Based on this evidence we recommend that the snack policy be changed, allowing students snacks in 3rd or 4th hour and again in 9th hour for the 2016-2017 school year. We gave a survey to all of the middle school teachers and sixteen responded. One items on the survey asked teachers if they ever snack in class, 87.5% of them responded that yes they do snack in class. Another item on the survey asked if teachers would be willing to have a snack basket in their room for students who cannot afford to bring their own snacks, 62.5% reported yes, and 37.5% said that they would prefer that it be kept in Mrs. Fly’s room or the office. A final item on the survey asked teachers what hours they get hungry, and 8 responded that they are hungry 3rd hour. Seven responded that they were hungry 4th, 8th, and 9th hours. …show more content…

Recently there has been revisions to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and schools were required to overhaul their entire menus to provide the students with healthy and nutritious foods including fruits and vegetables. The new school lunch rules are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 which has been implemented this fall. (Post Standard) The Hunger Act allows the USDA the opportunity to make reforms to the school lunch and breakfast programs. With these revisions come strict guidelines from the federal government that each school district must follow in order to receive funding and reimbursement (National School Lunch Program, 2012, August p. 1). In this essay i will be comparing the positive and negative effects of these recent revisions to the NSLP. I will then discuss whether or not these changes are beneficial to the children receiving the meal and whether NSLP is leaving children hungry or helping children make healthy food choices.…

The obtrusive limitation of the current lunch policy lies on two key factors—time and appetite. For one thing, the current lunch time given to students is approximately 30 minutes, not enough time for digesting food with high in fiber and low in calories after the everlasting lunch lines. Students can devoured a pizza and a hamburger expeditiously with few bites whereas students can only nibble away black been burgers, tasteless salad with a drink they disgust with. Not surprisingly, the students from L.A. United School meals are “being rejected in en masse.” Who would want wait a long lunch line for food they annoy? Who would have an appetite to battle with fruits and veggies when they could wait an hour and eat what they savor. Clearly, a successful meal should be the ones that could restore kids’ appetites and reduce eating time. In turn, this may transform student’s life style.…

However, most schools and school districts experience challenges to improve nutritional standards. Schools experience pressure to excel on standardizing test, as well as limited resources and budgets. It makes it difficult to find resources and typically leads to the strain of selling unhealthy food alternatives to raise revenue to support school functions. Consuming healthy food choices is proven to assist in improving attention spans and concentration for students by increasing their intellectual function and making them more alert. As an outcome, they tend to do better on their assessments and examinations. Sugar crashes could have led to fatigue and poor concentration during school. Therefore, to optimize mental capacity to learn at school, students should consume healthy food on a regular basis. Support eliminating poor food choices from our schools to set our nation on the right track to health, improve test and grades in schools, and decrease behavioural…

Schools should make sure that the lunch they provide is nutritious. Julia Tofan, a high school student in Connecticut states, “Students deserve balanced meals that will enable our minds and bodies to power through our busy days -- not a sugar rush that won't last beyond the lunch period” (Tofan and Millerick 1). Tofan is insisting that school lunches should be healthy. School providing junk food to the students are failing them because those are calories that break down easily. Once that food is gone the students will be hungry again making lunch a waste. However, healthy foods will stick with students throughout a longer period of time as well as helping students become healthier. Schools providing nutritious lunches will allow students to…

Next, there needs to be better lunches at the cafeteria at HMS. First of all, the lunches need to be bigger so the students can eat more. Before it was stated that students need food to focus in class. The current lunch sizes are for elementary schoolers. Middle schoolers are growing and need more food. Some people believe that the lunch sizes are fine but they are wrong because the kids will still be hungry. Ask the students, make a survey they will be hungry after lunch. They don’t have enough food and the little food we get is not even filling. For example, they have five small chicken wings that cost four dollars. The amount of chicken wings that we get is worth $1. Next, more kids will eat and it will be good for health. The school can…

It is not surprising that Los Angeles and many school districts in the country have been introducing strict bans on unhealthy foods due to an alarming problem with childhood obesity. The problem became more apparent when a national study conducted by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) found that one in three American children attending public schools were reported to be obese (Chase, par. 7). Most of the blame for the alarming ratio of student obesity was directed to “junk” foods and sedentary activity. In response, Los Angeles schools and many other schools in the country have made it a mission to offer their students healthier menus and encourage good eating habits largely by banning food items that are deemed unhealthy.…
