When in the 1920s, he meets famous icons, and some of his personal role models such as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, along with Gertrud Stein. Gertrud Stein even helps Gill edit his book and gives him suggestions on how to make it better and more appealing to readers. After befriending these historic icons, Gill starts to fall in love with one of their friends, Adrianna. Throughout his vacation in Paris, he makes many trips into the 1920s. On one of those trips, Gill and Adrianna are transported to a fancy night out in the 1890s, a time period Adrianna wishes she was born in. However, a man from that time period condemns Adrianna’s nostalgia of the 1890s, saying it is an empty time that lacks imagination. When it is time to leave, Adrianna refuses to go expressing to Gill how she feels the 1920s are dull and boring. Gill, in shock of how Adrianna views the 1920s, explains to her how to him that is the “golden age.” Through their trips through time, both Gill and Adrianna come to the realization that there is no one set “golden age”.
