Mikhail Gorbachev Research Paper
After the czar was overthrown in 1917 during the Russian revolution, the Soviet Union was under strict communist rule. With this system, people didn't own property or businesses and the vast majority of all production was done by the government. The people of the Soviet Union suffered under the rule of many dictators such as Stalin and Brezhnev, who abused this communist system to destroy the lives of many of its inhabitants. The communist system was at odds with the US as well as many other western countries due to ideological differences. These tensions put the countries through a Cold War in which the US and the USSR vied for influence in the world. This however was a dream not to be realized as the reforms introduced by Gorbachev proved to have disastrous effects. While some may say the Mikhail Gorbachev’s Perestroika reforms led to a more progressive Russia, the truth of the matter is that the reforms caused a spike in unemployment due to the creation of an environment unsuitable for business and the regional autonomy led the the breakup and collapse of the Soviet Union, destroying the lives of many Soviet citizens. While created with good intentions, the economic reforms introduced by Perestroika ended in failure to an inability of the Soviet workforce and market to adapt to rapidly changing conditions. The perestroika reforms were created so that people in the Soviet Union would be able to start their own privately-owned businesses. Starting a business however was no easy task in the Soviet Union. The communist government had funded all production and so the ideas of investors giving money to private businesses simply wasn’t there. Getting the funding for a businesses was next to impossible for those who wished to start a business. In addition the tax

    At the time, America and the Soviet Union were enemies, and America did not trust the Soviets. Reagan labeled the Soviet Union as “The Evil Empire,” but Gorbachev was able to persuade him and America that they mean America no harm and that they want to both be at peace with one another (PBS).     The USA and USSR both have very different ideologies. The USA believed in a capitalist economy and a democratic system of government. This meant that the citizens of America could vote in their President and Congress in free elections. But, in the USSR they believed in communism.
