This barbed wire wall progressed into a cement wall then eventually to an 100 mile long wall with mines, watchtowers, and dogs guarding the wall to make sure no one escaped. There were also checkpoints throughout the Berlin Wall. East Germany was not a desirable place to live during that time. There were no great jobs,the people were poor, and there was poor agriculture. On the contrary West Germany was very prosperous there was money and jobs available as well as agriculture. After the wall was built tensions grew quickly between the allies and the Soviet Union. The West Germans built this wall because they knew West Germany was prospering and wanted to halt a mass exodus that has been going on for years. Even though it was very difficult some people escaped by hot air balloons and tunnels, but over 100 people died trying to escape the wall. When people who attempted to escape died they would be left out in the open and used as an example to let the others know what will happen to them if they attempt to escape. Communism began to decline, there were strikes and uprisings against it within its own borders. This left the Soviets to attempt to dampen the anti-communist efforts. The Berlin Wall falling symbolized the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet
