The Berlin Wall was a structure that was virtually built overnight in Germany in 1961 separating East and West Berlin causing shock among the citizens. He states that both sides of Berlin were equally poor and there was the same quality of life in both East and West Berlin due to the poverty in the 1950’s. German citizens were rebuilding their government and their public community. The Third Reich ended and the idea of communism entered the East German’s minds. The different mindsets of East and West Berliners created a competition where both sides planned the future of the city out as if it was still one whole entity. The difference in ideology helped justify the idea of the blockade. Once the barrier was built, it was easier for East Berlin to cleanse themselves of the old ideology and to begin living in their sector under their communist like government.
