If you spent long enough time in the Military, you will come across leaders of have different types of Leadership styles. Some leaders have a very hard headed, head strong, authoritarian, it’s either there way or the highway type of leader/ personality. On the other hand you will have a leader that looks out for the well-being of their Soldiers, try’s to take care of their Soldiers by having the Soldiers best interest in heart. That type of Leader is willing to listen to other people’s ideas and expand on them. One thing for sure on both of these types of
Leaderships styles is that you can learn what to do and what not to do for when …show more content…
you become a
Leader.
In the book Black Hearts, LTC Kunk and SFC Gallagher showed both types of these
Leadership styles.
LTC Kunk was a hard-nosed, head strong, authoritarian, to the point that his
Company Commanders were always second guessing all their actions and plans. It came down to the point that during command meetings, LTC Kunk would belittle, insult, undermined his
Commanders in front of their Soldiers and peers. During the Deployment LTC Kunk took his
PSD to different ECPs or TCPs and would look for deficiencies and instead of letting the
Leadership know to fix it, LTC Kunk would degrade and blame the Soldiers in there battle buddies death in front of other Soldiers. LTC Kunk lost all respect from his Soldiers underneath him. SFC Gallagher on the other hand was a prime example of how a Leader should conduct themselves with the Soldiers. Even though SFC Gallagher didn’t make it past a month due to with CSM Edwards, SFC Gallagher was a great leader. Putting himself with his men trying to get the best out of them by showing what right looks like. SFC Gallagher would work the ECPs with his men just to give some of his men a few hour break from shifts. Also SFC Gallagher would call the higher command every day to get more and better supplies for his Platoon
to accomplish the mission they were tasked with. SFC Gallagher would led point man on IED sweeps because if there was a IED out there he didn’t want to see any of his Soldiers die, he 1
thought he should die first before them. This was the only Leader in the book I would want to emulate my Leadership style. There are many things that both LTC Kunk and SFC Gallagher could have done different on this deployment. LTC Kunk could have listen to his Commanders advice when they needed help and SFC Gallagher could have been a little more passive when speaking to CSM Edwards when he was trying to get supplies. I believe reading this book can teach you what to do and what not to do as leader just from these to Leaders.
