Over the last few decades the economy has changed greatly but one thing that
hasn’t changed much is the minimum wage. In politics the national minimum wage is a
huge debate. Not only because it affects workers, but also it affects businesses. In
places like Denmark the minimum wage is $20 USD while in the United States it is
$10.10. The minimum wage needs to be increased because right now it doesn’t account
for inflation, and because the present minimum wage is not enough to support a family.
In the year 2016 things are priced differently from the past. Nowadays things that
would cost a few cents 30 years ago, now cost dollars. This is due to inflation. In 1938
towards the end of the Great Depression, Congress …show more content…
Back then the cost of
living was much lower, so $0.25 per hour wage was suitable for most families. Today
the costs of living have increased drastically but the minimum wage has not. In an
article by Chad Halvorson from When I Work, wrote “The federal minimum wage needs
to be raised in order to account for inflation, which raises every year and the minimum
wage has only been risen three times in the past three decades.”. This excerpt
describing the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage show that even though items
are becoming more expensive, the minimum is is not increasing at the same rate.
Another article from EBSCO states, “... Consumer Price Index, compiled monthly by the
Bureau of Labor Statistics, which reflects the "buying power" of the American dollar.
Based on the buying power of the minimum wage in 1961, which was $1.25 an hour,
workers in 2006 needed to earn at least $8.44 an hour.” explaining the decrease of the
US dollar.
The United States is the third largest country in the world with 323 million
citizens, yet 43.9 million of those people are living in poverty. Most of these people living
in poverty are working more than 40 hours a week, and do not make enough to …show more content…
In a quote by Bernie Sanders he states, “The current federal minimum
wage is starvation pay and must become a living wage.” claiming that anybody working
a minimum wage does not make enough to provide for his/ her family. Nowadays most
people have to work two to three minimum jobs. Some may argue that a minimum wage
paying job is not suppose to support a family, but in an economy when there are more
minimum wage paying jobs than higher paying jobs, the higher paying jobs are going to
be harder to get. Jeff Chapman wrote in an article, “A substantial portion (38%) of low- wage workers in March 2003 lived in families with incomes below 200% of the poverty
line in 2002 an income range (less than $29,000 for a family of three in 2002) in which
people are often unable to afford basic necessities.”. This portion of the article describe
the numbers of citizens living in poverty.
In conclusion the national minimum wage needs to be increased. The reasoning
for why the minimum wage needs to be increased is because it does not account for
inflation, and those working a minimum wage job due not make enough to support their
families. Many people have started protesting to raise the minimum wage and many
more are encouraged to
