The major points concerning the challenges to using a business case for addressing health disparities begins with the challenge of quantifying both the business case and the social case for addressing disparities. Sound business and quality improvement principles can guide health care organizations seeking to reduce disparities. Interventions may help focus resources and engage health care and community partners who can share in the costs of, and the gains from such efforts.…

This paper focuses on the overrepresentation or over-identification of minority students found in special education in our schools. I chose to research this topic because being an immigrant myself, I can relate to the education experience of a student who is new to the American school system.…

When I first started this course I began to ask myself, “Am I culturally competent?” Did I even know what cultural competency means? The Office of Minority Health (2005) describes cultural competency as “a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations.”…
Furthermore, another factor that adds to the problem of students of color departing their education is that schools in these low-SES neighborhoods place more attention in the security aspect of the school than the academics and success of their students. According to Freeman (2013) Kim(2013) Rawson(2013) the Los Angeles School Police Department ( LASPD) has a budget of over $52 million to employ school policers. Moreover, schools now have more school policers and securities in school grounds than they have counselors or programs to assist at risk youth of dropping out ( Freeman&Kim& Rawson, 2013.) In current society students of color are not getting prepared to attend higher education institutes, but being prepared to enter to the criminal justice…
Community Health Centers (CHCs) are one of the major providers of health care services for minorities groups. A recent presidential mandate increased the founding for CHCs. Although a good achievement, this mandate is only addressing a small percentage of the group in need for health…

Large disparities exist between minorities and the rest of Americans in major areas of health. Even though the overall health of the nation is improving, minorities suffer from certain diseases up to five times more than the rest of the nation. President Clinton has committed to a reform project to eliminate disparities in six areas of minority health by the Year 2010. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be jumping in on this huge battle. The six areas that will be focused on are: Infant Mortality, Cancer Screening and Management, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, HIV Infection and AIDS, and Child and Adult Immunizations.…
The United States is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse countries in the world. Many people of different customs and religions share the same space. Yet, the healthcare workforce does not represent the nation’s diverse population. Physician Assistant (PA), specifically, still remains predominantly white. According to the 2013 annual report from the National Commission on Certification of PAs, 85.6% of certified PAs indicated they were white. Given that diversity matters to healthcare and treatment of patients, many minority groups still experience health disparities despite the overall improvement in the healthcare system. Being an American of Vietnamese descent, I want to be a part of the nation’s movement in making PA become…

The crop of students moving through college right now includes the largest group of mixed-race people ever to come of age in the United States (Saulny,2011). The country is in the midst of a demographic shift driven by immigration and intermarriage (Saulny, 2011). Many young adults of mixed backgrounds are rejecting the color lines that have defined Americans for generations in favor of a much more fluid sense of identity (Saulny,2011). Identification may seem minor except that statistics on ethnicity and race are used for many important purposes. These include assessing disparities in health, education, employment and housing, enforcing civil rights protections, and deciding who might qualify for special consideration as members of underrepresented minority groups.…
There are many people that use the health care system in the United States. What most of them don’t know is that they might be treated differently through their race, ethnicity, or class. One of the biggest aspects that affect this is that there is very little access to health care. The group of people that suffer in the US is the minorities. Most of them do not have the finances to afford medical insurance. Right now, medical insurance is being forced into every household in the country. Even the average American is having a hard time adjusting to these changes. An individual could be working multiple jobs and still not be able to afford medical insurance. Most of these jobs do not offer insurance unless they are in a management position and that makes it much tougher to have than just purchasing an insurance plan. Also, many of these people are undocumented or come from low income houses and therefore are left without any access to medical care.…
