P2 and P3- Explain different psychological approaches to health practice.

There are six different psychological approaches in psychology, below will now discuss the different psychological approaches to health practice. The six psychological approaches are; Behaviourist perspective Social learning theory, Psychodynamic perspective, Humanistic perspective, Cognitive perspective and the Biological perspective and also will be outlined and explained.

There are many different approaches that can be related to health and social care practices, such as the behavioural approach, social learning approach, psychodynamic approach, humanistic approach, cognitive approach and the biological approach.

Behaviourist Approach
The behaviourist approach as explained in P1, suggests that learning is what changes an individual’s behaviour. Therefore, any changes in behaviour of an individual are the result of events that have taken place within the environment.
However this approach can be applied in a health practice such as within a health clinic or a hospital. For example, if a service user is being sexually abused and seeks help within a hospital, a care provider such as a doctor will be able to determine what behavioural approach will be best suited for the individual. 'This approach can be applied in social care practice such as therapy. For example, a child or young person may need to go to a therapist as a result of witnessing physical abuse within their home.'

The concept of “best practice” is widely used in business management, healthcare, and in the social work field to mean the most efficient and effective way of doing things: ways that use the minimum of resources and yet return the optimum results. In the context of professional social work, often there are built-in tensions between the pressure for efficiency and the need to respect the individuality of clients and to work at their pace. Social workers must take into account the complexity and the difficulty of tasks where there are no straightforward actions which could promote the welfare of one person or group without possibly causing harm, or restricting their own or other’s rights and freedoms. Best practice does not mean that the process or outcomes are perfect, nor that there are no constraints on what can be accomplished, but it should indicate that by having utilized evidence based practices (EBP), the best that could be achieved given a specific situation, with a specific set of people and circumstances, resulted.…

Every theory has strengths and limitations, which can be beneficial to understanding behaviour as well as leaving gaps in knowledge as not every theory can explain every facet of human behaviour and understanding this is a key part of social work practice. The social work profession is guided by the AASW Practice Standards, which aim to provide a guide to practice, collective standards and expectations and can be used as a platform for ongoing professional development (AASW, 2013). A major strength of social learning theory is that it is not based on a single stimulus-response but incorporates an individual’s problem solving ability, memory and mental imagery (Grusec, 1992). Being able to conduct a holistic assessment of an individuals situation imperative in effective social work practice and requires the skill of applying knowledge to practice by gathering the appropriate information (AASW, 2013). As social learning theory takes a wide range of information into explaining and understanding an individuals behaviour it would be beneficial to use along side other theories for a social worker to gain an understanding on why individuals behave in certain ways. Furthermore, research has shown that when use in a behaviour…
