• With that good relationship the US makes it impossible for China and the SSR to have a rapprochement so the it is a way for the US to protect itself from those two communist countries and to make the growth of communism through the alliance of those 2 other superpowers impossible.

2. Middle East -> failure

• Six Day War (Russian agents spread the rumour in Syria that the Israeli were going to attack, so Syrian asked Nasser (Egypt) for support. The Israelis attacked and that was the start of the war) between the Israelis and Syria, Jordan and Egypt (together). The war was a disaster for the Arabs and weakened Nasser.
• Yom Kippur (1973) between Israelis (in the middle of their most important religious festival= Yom Kippur) and Syria + Egypt (whom wanted to use the arms they had against Israel without direct help of the Soviet)

1) Moscow jump in the war and resupply Syria and Egypt asking other Arab countries to join
2) US do not react to that war
3) Golda Meir (Israel) threatened with nuclear weapon
4) US gives supplies to the Israelis who penetrated Egypt
5) Ceasefire proposed by the Russians and signed by Kissinger

3. Soviet Invade Afghanistan -> failure

• The international platform is quite in 1979 (Salt 2 is signed )
• Soviet invade Afghanistan out of the blue
