First of all I would like to know the differences in formulae between Potassium Mangante and Potassium Permanganate.

Secondly, In a test between Potassium Manganate (VII) and an unknown organic solution, the solution turned from pink to dark red. Does anyone know which functional group would be present in solution?
Potassium Magante is K2MnO4 whereas the permanganate is KMnO4, in the second one the Mn as a higher oxidation state of +7, the other one just +6. It would show that a double bond is present. (It oxides the alkene to a diol, which changes the oxidation state of the Mn changing it's colour)

    Unknown A (Module 11A)

The purpose of Module 11A was to test for the presence or absence of a particular set of functional groups through the use of wet chemical tests. In this manner, Unknown A which was a colorless solution, was first tested with 2,4-DNP which after mixing for a few seconds formed a bright yellow precipitate. Although this confirms the presence of either a ketone or aldehyde group, one simple chemical test does not completely specify the presence or absence of other functional groups. Therefore, a second test was made in order to test for the presence of alkyl halides (R-Br or R-I specifically). However, after the addition of alcoholic silver nitrate, AgNO3 (test #2) to a few drops of the unknown, the mixture remained colorless and no precipitate formed. Following this, the third test was performed in…

A 300 ml 0.5 M sulfuric acid solution was created by adding 25 ml of 6 M sulfuric acid to 275 ml of distilled water. A buret was then cleaned and filled with the KmnO4 solution. Next, 10 to 15 ml of 0.1 M sodium oxalate solution was added to 100 ml sulfuric acid and placed in an Erlenmeyer flask for titration. The solution was then heated to around 60 degrees Celsius. The solution was then titrated until a faint pink/purple color remains for about thirty seconds. The Molarity of the KMnO4 can then be determined. This step was repeated.…

There was also a color change in the solution when potassium iodide was added and nanoparticles were present. The reason that a color change occurred when KI was added to the solution was because KI is ionic and when it was added to Red #3, the molecules dissociated causing the color to change. Also, due to the fact that when ionic solutions are added to nanoparticles, they clump together and cause a color change, we can conclude that there are nanoparticles in this red solution. In order to determine the identity of this solution, a future experiment will have to be conducted because there is not enough evidence to fully conclude what Red #3 is based off of the four experiments conducted. Due to the strong conductivity of this red solution, it is possible that it is a strong acid or base because those are also ionic compounds.…
