Miss Columbia John Gast Analysis
John Gast, a Brooklyn based painter and lithographer, painted this picture in 1872 on commission for George Crofutt, the publisher of a popular series of western travel guides. Few Americans saw the actual painting, but many encountered it in reproduction. The painting is so rich in detail that many usually imagine it to be a large canvas. But in fact it is tiny, just 12 3/4 x 16 3/4 inches in size. This painting can be analyzed in a few different ways; Ionographic, Feminist, and Contextual points of view. In this painting there are lots of signs and symbols for different objects throughout the painting. First and most obvious is the lady flying across the middle of the painting, “Miss Columbia” as she symbolizes the USA, a large, luminous, ethereal, feminine figure of “American Progress” with the “star of the empire” on her forehead and long, light, wavy hair leads miners, settlers, and travelers from East to West. The symbols throughout the …show more content…
She represents feminism in different aspects. In the painting she is carrying a school book and telephone wire signifying she is bringing along technology and knowledge. She represents bringing goodness to the west with the expansion. The feminine figure and focus of Gast’s painting recalls the classical folds of another famous feminine figure’s garments and her message of liberty. Two years before the completion of Gast’s “American Progress,” the first small model of the benevolent grace of Liberty Island’s welcoming Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was created. A widely recognized symbol, the lady of the New York Harbor indicated a successful journey for immigrants and visitors the world over. With her progression, the darkness fades as she ushers in new light. Men of various trades accompany her on foot and by various methods of transportation: horseback, covered wagon, carriage, steam engine, and

The piece titled Painted Circa 1921-22, Georgia O’Keeffe’s Lake George Reflection, the most ambitious in scale of her works from the 1920s, is a meditation on the sublime, building upon the tradition of the 19th century Hudson River School artists who sought to capture the drama and beauty of the unspoiled landscape surrounding Lake George. The painting “Painted circa” look at the angle horizontally, the painting exemplifies the boldly colorful landscapes which foreshadowing the abstracted paintings of the New Mexico hills from her later years. As the vertically, as Lake George Reflection was first exhibited in 1923 at the Anderson Galleries, the infinite horizon shifts to a powerful vertical thrust, with the formerly symmetrical reflections of the landscape…

I think that the multiple rectangles in his piece stands for the fluctuating experiences that immigrants have when coming to America, and the motion seen in the organic shape above the statue signifies the contrasts among these immigrants’ experiences. The empty area on the left portion of the piece that denotes that the supreme America—the same America that migrants wish to come to—is really not all that spectacular. In shorter words, this painting symbolizes the significant vision that falls short from truth or reality. Andy has coiled the size of the Statue of Liberty, copied it twelve times, and gave each repetition its own hard and gritty looking texture. The organic blobs masking the statue in some sections of the painting was a result of his silk-screening technique. These blobs give the painting a quality of ambiguity. This ambiguity leads to the notion that the widespread impression of immigration to America is…

The meaning of the painting, as perceived, is the hindrance black people faced in entering the land of prosperity; the obstacle they faced was nothing other than White dominance. There is a White giant like figure in the middle of the painting with a sharp teethed wolf or monster underneath, creating a sense of evilness and scariness. They block the blacks from entering their dreams, in other words, a successful life. As a result, black people are sad and…

To the left of the painting, my eye caught the attention of a runner. He seems to be waving a captured flag to the people in the front of the painting. To me, this signifies when us, the French, were defeated and Wolfe would been seen as a national hero (Annand,1964, p.46). Well not for me. The city that I loved so deeply and all the civilians within, our life would be changed forever.…

I didn’t even notice it at first, it hardly stuck out against its counterparts. Most of the other paintings at the museum were splashed with dazzling colors that seemed to lift their two dimensional images out of the frame. “Hoeing” by Robert Gwathmey, seemed to do just the opposite, it drew me in. It must have been its distorted figures that first captured my attention. Surrounded by beautiful paintings that almost seemed life like, “Hoeing” in comparison, was an abstract oil painting of oddly shaped workers. Berger said, “The way we see thing is affected by what we know or what we believe”. (167) Having rarely been to museums except on school trips my exposure to art has been very limited. In fact, most of what I know to be art is derived from a single drawing course I took in high school. Everything in the course was directed towards making your drawing seem life like; proper shading, three-dimensional drawing. In whatever case, I came to believe “good” art was the piece that looked the prettiest. Standing in the museum hall, I wasn’t disappointed, most of the paintings there were so realistic they bordered on the difference between a painting or photo. But “Hoeing” was not attractive, or at least not in the traditional sense. Even the frame looked like it had been chipped away over half century. Looking at the painting I was surprised at how an arbitrary piece could make it into a museum. The painting itself portrayed a group of African-American famers laboring at multiple tasks. The two-dimensional figures were either prominently dark black or brown and were continually bent over from either work or exhaustion. The sky was a dull gray mixed with tints of blue while the ground was a scorched red and orange. The colors didn’t add for detail but rather for mood. The dark undertones brought a “tiresome” behavior to the painting that was complimented by the painting’s simplicity. This painting did not stick out to me for its…

There are lines following her, shining the light that she exudes. Her angelic essence is seen leading them in their journey to the new land. This reinforces the idea of the manifest destiny-that they were destined by God Himself to expand the country. The concept made Americans believe they were entitled to steal the native’s land just because they differed in culture, skin color, language, etc. Gast presents the “Star of the Empire” on the woman’s forehead, reinforcing the idea that America is an empire entitled to any action required in order to gain more land.…

The symbolic message I feel that was given off from this particular piece of art was world peace of some sort. In the art there are many representations of various ethnicities such as the black lady in the upper corner, or the Native Americans in the center of the piece. I feel as if the author was trying to put various different ethnicities all on one piece of work to portray people coming together as a whole.…

One symbol that stuck out to me immediately was the image of the American flag. The American flag stand for freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also it could stand for the American dream but these people in the film aren’t living the American dream. There work hard and they can barely make a living if even that. The second symbol that stuck out to me where the Christmas gifts that Mary Ventilli received from the shelter. There is a part when she said that she donated to people like her. But somehow life placed her in the situation where she required that help and donation from others.…

John Gast’s painting is set on an American landscape, with the right half of the painting representing eastern America, and the left half of the painting representing western America. The first thing to notice about the painting is the variations in light seen when comparing the east and the west. The rightmost edge of the painting is bright, but as the painting shifts left it begins to grow darker, with the furthest left edge being marked by a foreboding sky adorned with storm clouds. Similarly, the gentle rolling hills of…

The second floor of National Museum of the American Indian contains many interesting exhibits that tell stories of American Indians, such as the livelihood of Native Americans in the present time and the culture of American Indians. There are many items that are related to American Indians’ lives in those exhibits. However, the author of this essay is interested in The American Indian which is the name of an oil painting that has been depicted in one of those exhibits, Our Live. This oil painting was painted on linen in 1970 by Fritz Scholder who was the renowned Native American artist of the 20th century. The painting depicts an American Indian man who beautifies his long black hair with a feather and holds a pipe tomahawk in front of the yellow and brown background. Additionally, the man covers the American flag over his body.…
