Miss Strangeworth shows condescension throughout the whole story. Her house was so clean that “even the stones of the front walk were swept and clear” that” there is a legend about tourist once mistaking it for the local museum” (Jackson, 1941, p. 168). Her perfectionism not only displayed in her house but also her appearance. When she went out, she would always “[take] up her hat---Miss Strangeworth’s hat were proverbial in the town” (Jackson, 1941, p. 172).Such a perfectionist cheated almost everyone in the town.
It is complex of her to appear to be kind but rebarbative actually. At first, she seemed like very polite and considerate. “She had to stop every minute or so to say good morning to someone” as well as “ask after someone’s health”. (Jackson, 1941, p. 165).Actually, she always wrote letters in sneaky words to stop the evil from her town and “never signed up her name” (Jackson, 1941, p. 163).She thought it could stop the evil but it disturbed other people’s lives.
