During his travels, Roald meets a woman named Miss Trefusis, which he met on his trip to Africa. At first, she seems rather weird. " She was eating an orange at the time and I noticed suddenly that she was not eating it in the normal way" (The Voyage Out, 42). Mdisho and Roald were roommates and they built a strong friendship. According to Roald, Mdisho is a Concerned type of person. "But do you know how to iron a shirt?" (Mdisho of the Mwanumwezi, 67). Mdisho cares a lot about Roald, and he wants to make sure that he will be able to take care of himself. Another trait that Roald uses to describe Mdisho is the word smart. "I didn not go through the road because the askaris might have stopped me" (Mdisho of the Mwanumwezi, 35). Mdisho is a smart young man that was born in a tribe of warriors, learning how to fight and become a warrior, rather quickly.
