Passive Transport (Section 5-1)
Answer Sheet
VOCABULARY REVIEW Explain the relationship between the terms in each of the following pairs of terms. 1. concentration gradient, diffusion: A difference in the concentration of molecules in two areas, called a concentration gradient, can result in diffusion, the movement of molecules from the area of higher concentration to the area of lower concentration. 2. osmosis, turgor pressure: Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a cell membrane. When osmosis results in water molecules entering a plant cell, the molecules exert a pressure against the cell wall, called turgor pressure. 3. hypertonic, plasmolysis : hypertonic solution has a higher solute concentration than the cytosol of a cell. In a hypertonic solution a plant cell will lose water and shrink away from the cell wall, a process called plasmolysis.

SHORT ANSWER Answer the questions in the space provided.

1. What happens to the movement of molecules at equilibrium? At equilibrium, the movement of molecules continues, but because there is no concentration gradient, there is no net movement in any particular direction. 2. How do carrier proteins transport substances across cell membranes? Carrier proteins bind to a molecule of the substance on one side of the membrane, change shape, transport the molecule across the membrane, and release the molecule on the other side. 3. What types of stimuli can cause the gates on ion channels to open or close?
The stimuli are stretching of the cell membrane, electrical signals, and chemicals in the cytosol or external environment.

4. Critical Thinking How does the interaction between a carrier protein and the substance it transports resemble the interaction between an enzyme and its substrate? Both involve the binding of a specific substance to a particular kind of protein and a change in shape of the protein as the process (transport or

one of their ends outside the cell and the other inside. By acting as a kind of channel, carrier, or pump, transport proteins provide a passageway for those large or hydrophilic molecules to cross the membrane. They are also very specific: a protein that transports glucose will not transport calcium ions, for example. The cells of your body contain hundreds of types of transport proteins. Some antibiotics are small hydrophobic molecules that can cross the cell membrane directly by simple diffusion—tetracycline, for example.…

Diffusion is the molecular net movement from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. For instance, when a person is smoking, the smoke diffuses into the air. The molecules in the smoke, released from the cigarette, travel through the air. Here is how it occurs. When molecules are close enough, they collide with each other, their kinetic energy changes. Due to the direct relationship between diffusion and molecular kinetic energy, the molecules move away from the point of the collision as their kinetic energy is redirected. Therefore, molecules always tend to distribute themselves throughout the area they stay. It continues until dynamic equilibrium is reached, that is, no net movement happens. Molecules at that time are still in motion, but the amount of molecules moving in one direction equals to the amount of molecules moving in the other direction.…

In this lab we will look at how molecules move across the membrane of a cell . Osmosis is the movement of water across a cell membrane. In osmosis the cell membrane is selectively permeable, which allows for the membrane to control what types of substances that passes through.Transportation can either be passive or active.Passive transport does not require the use of added energy where as active transport requires the cell to use energy.…

Carrier proteins are saturated throughout the cell membrane, and can facilitate movement by carrying small molecules, such as amino acids, across the cell membrane. Carrier proteins do not require energy because they facilitate movement from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. Many carrier proteins can facilitate movement in both directions, and allow molecules to enter or exit. Direction is based on concentration gradient. For example, if the concentration is higher outside the cell, molecules would naturally move to na area of lower concentration. That is, they would enter the cell.…

When plant and animal cells are placed in a hypotonic environment, osmosis will occur. The structure of these cells determines the response to the difference in gradient, whether this be lysis (the explosion of cells due to the sudden increase in water pressure within the cell) in animal cells or turgor pressure (the pressure created by the increase in water pressure within the cell) in plant cells. Turgor pressure prevents further osmosis, which causes the water potential outside the cell to be lower than that inside the cell. When placed in a hypertonic environment, the gradient in animal and plant cells are reversed and water exits the cell. This sudden release of water results in a shrinking membrane, called crenation, which…
