Hope Renewed
Salva is on a journey that is filled with death, despair, and destruction yet, he still has hope. This is during a time when war is happening all around him. How is this possible for someone to be positive during a time of negativity? Salva initially lost all sense of hope when his village was under attack and his teacher made all of the students run away from the school into the bush. He was upset about being alone, away from his family without anyone to care for him. How would he survive? Where would his family end up? Would they survive? It seemed as though Salva had no hope. All through the journey that Salva was on he kept losing hope but then that hope would be renewed. His hope was renewed in chapter 3 when he met the old Dinka woman who owned the barn he was left in, in chapter 4 when he was with Buksa and they found the beehive to feast on, and in chapter 6 when he is reunited with his uncle. Throughout Salva’s journey, one that was filled with death, despair, and destruction, his hope was renewed. The first example was when Salva was left behind in a barn while he was sleeping by the Dinka women, and he met the old woman who owned the land he had been trespassing on when he woke up alone and scared. “Salva let out his breath in relief. The woman looked up and saw him. But at least he was not alone now, and that knowledge was stronger than the uncertainty about what the woman might do or say to him.” (pg. 16) This woman was a symbol of hope for Salva. In a time when he was alone with no one to care for him, no one to feed him, running into this old woman was a blessing. She represented Salva’s family and that’s is what he needed at that time. She also represented hope. Hope that now Salva would have someone to care for him. Hope for his survival.
Another example of how Salva’s hope was renewed during this story is in chapter 4
