Monologue: Jordan Baker
MONOLOGUE: JORDAN BAKER

What? You got something you want to say to me too? Yea, well get in line, there’s a lot of people trying to get a word in. I mean, who do they think they are to judge me? The world made me dishonest not the other way around. Do they really think that I fancy cheating my way through life? I don’t wish to be this way but is there any other way I can survive in this society? I live in the public eye. I have to take more care than the rest of them to protect my image, but how could they ever understand.

Everyone has to point out that I have bent the rules here and there to benefit my career, but I have witnessed others doing it as well. Haven’t you noticed? Gatsby lies to us all the time so he can divert our attention away from his past, so why cant I? Daisy is just the same she lies to Tom about Gatsby all the time but that doesn’t necessarily make them bad people either, does it?

Nick, all I am trying to say is I have been honest with you throughout almost all of this. You might think I am dishonest, selfish, and cynical, but I know you’re attracted to me nevertheless. I don’t want to be the way I am, it’s just completely beyond my control. But I am a lady of the upper class and there are

At this point in the story, Gatsby is convincing Nick to invite Daisy over, which would allow Gatsby to reunite with his long lost love. Nick agrees to the plan, and, as a reward, Gatsby gives an offer to Nick and says to him, “You see, I carry on a little business on the side, a sort of side line, you understand. And I thought that if you don’t make very much –” (82). While Gatsby is not lying to Nick about the opportunity, Gatsby’s words hint at the involvement of illegal activities. When Nick first came upon meeting Miss Baker, he is startled by her cool demeanor as “her chin raised a little, as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall” (8). Even then he feels the need to provide an apology for “having disturbed her by coming in” (8), showing that the impression and atmosphere she invokes is intimidating. The more one learns about Jordan Baker, the more one sees that she is not only cold but deceptive and dishonest as well when she borrowed a car and lied about leaving the top down when it was raining. As well as the scandalous golf tournament that she cheated in, because of these events Nick considers Jordan “incurably dishonest” (58). He suspects that “she began dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep that cool, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard jaunty body” (58) as a way to protect herself. She even avoids dating clever men, as she doesn’t want anyone exposing her weaknesses. Therefore, the conclusion can be made that her dishonesty is conditioned into her from an early age to protect…

Both Gatsby and Daisy knew that she loves Tom. Gatsby is stuck far into the past before that war. “I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before “he said nodding determinedly. “ She’ll see.” He talked a lot about the past says roger. Overall, in The Great Gatsby, the characters personalities are altered due to the desire to have as much money as possible. Each of the characters do something that is totally against today’s morals. Jay Gatsby performs illegal acts to become rich, Daisy Buchanan marries someone because they are rich, and Tom Buchanan cheats on his wife just because he can. Fitzgerald illustrates that these actions were completely normal in an attempt to pursue…
