Moore's Article Analysis
The greatest strength of Moore’s’ article is the fact that he has significant scientific evidence to back up his conclusions. First, he opens his article by saying that he has just come back from a scientific voyage into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with the purpose of studying its effects. This immediately gives a sense that he understands the consequences of the object of his was writing. By asserting that he studied the area in question, he immediately lends scientific credit to his arguments. In addition, he goes on to reference several scientific studies. In order to illustrate his argument that no agency or organization has yet been able to find a way of recycling plastics that covers the vast amount that escapes into our water …show more content…
By using this study to support his claim, Moore displays that his premises is true and scientifically supported, making this a sound argument. Soon after making this point, Moore says “We know that plastic debris entangles and slowly kills millions of sea creatures; that hundreds of species mistake plastics for their natural food, ingesting toxicants that cause liver and stomach abnormalities in fish and birds, often choking them to death.” This, along with the fact that microplasics can get back into humans through consumption of contaminated sea food are well known scientific facts. Here, Moore dos not specifically reference a study, but he does use well know science to provide support for his argument. Furthermore, he refers back to the studies that were performed on his voyage. He uses the evidence collected from blood and liver samples of fish to assert that plastic pollution is causing protein and hormone abnormalities. Another example of a scientifically supported premises. By using science to back up his premises and them making logical assumptions from them, Moore illustrates that he has viable evidence for his opinions about pollution. He also uses this evidence to logically connect plastic pollution to his solution of preventing plastics from ever getting

In Purdy’s article, she discusses the five garbage patch gyres located in the ocean. She states that these gyres were noticed in the 1970s but didn’t catch the public eye until 1997 when Captain Charles Moore began to perform research. He observed that there was far more plastic than plankton. Purdy discusses how gyres damage the aquatic life and ecosystems on the ocean's floor. The article ends by stating how scientists agree that the only way to fix this issue is by drawing attention to the problem, taking steps such as recycling, and using items that contain no plastic…

Van Jones describes the dangers of plastic. Everybody knows the harm it does to animals, especially, those who live in the ocean. Little do we know, it is also a problem for people, in specific, poor people. It hurts people in the production of it, the use, and the disposal of plastic. The recycling of some countries means burning plastic. That results in toxic chemicals being released into the air. Not only does it affect people who live near there, but that polluted air travels across the oceans and affects other places and people as well. Jones teaches us about biomimicry. Biomimicry is having respect for other specie's wisdom. It is acknowledging the way other beings live without harming the planet and themselves. We should learn from other…

In fact, the two Wes Moores would never officially meet until they were both well into their adulthood. The story follows the two boys on their separate journeys into adulthood in an effort to determine what factors might have caused each Wes Moore to end up in the situations that they ended up in later in life; one a criminal and convicted murderer, and the other one a successful businessman, veteran, Rhodes Scholar, and White House Fellow. The book The Other Wes Moore tells the riveting story of two boys, both who have the same name and were born not that far apart in Baltimore. Told through different years, each snippet of both these Weses lives shows the contrast they have. Moore uses multiple rhetorical devices in his story that help with his overall purpose of writing this book. Moore’s purpose throughout this whole story shows how the decisions a person makes shapes them into the overall person in the end. In his introduction Moore wrote, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his” (Moore, xi). This quote overall explains Moore’s purpose. Everyone makes decisions, and some of those decisions are bad; however, the overall decision that is made results in something else. Every decision that is made shapes you into a new…

He states, “Lost and discarded nets and lines from fishing vessels are important contributors to marine debris, especially in heavily fished areas. These vessels also lose plastic floats, traps, pots, and other gear. Other sea-based sources of plastic pollution include oil and gas platforms, aquaculture facilities, and cargo ships that lose containers to the sea” (Managing Marine Plastic Pollution, 2015, para. 4). In this article Tibbetts talks about how many items contribute to polluting the oceans but does not go into how it harms the animals as much as “Trashing the Oceans” does. Talking about the animals gives an emotional way to show how it can really harm them and the…

Often times, there are debates surrounding controversial environmental issues, such as global warming, deforestation and nuclear power. But then, there is little or no public debate on the impact of plastic bags on the environment. Plastic bags kill tens of thousands of animals every year. In the marine environment plastic bag litter is lethal, killing tens of thousands of birds, whales, seals and turtles every year as they often mistake plastic bags for food such as jellyfish (planetark, 2015). Various experts estimate that up to a million birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed each year from plastic debris including bags (One Green Planet, 2015). It is estimated that between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year ( One Green Planet, 2015). This means that plastic bags is serious environmental issue. Given this, we as sustainability leaders should start to think of a way to trigger some public debate on this issue. Sustainability is about…

We 're treating the oceans like a trash bin: around 80 percent of marine litter originates on land, and most of that is plastic. Plastic that pollutes our oceans and waterways has severe impacts on our environment and our economy. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating marine plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation. Scientists are investigating the long-term impacts of toxic pollutants absorbed, transported, and consumed by fish and other marine life, including the potential effects on human health.…

Captain Moore noticed a great deal of debris, mostly plastic floating in the Ocean. Having founded the Algalita Marine Research Institute also known as AMRI in 1994 to study coastal resources his focus immediately changed. In the article “Sea Salt Around the World is Contaminated by Plastic” researchers discover that microplastics in sea salt from around the US, Europe, and China. This also proves that plastic pollution is pervasive in the environment. Research proved that tiny plastic particles have been found in our sea salt. This is dangerous because it means that microplastics are entering our daily food chain through the salts in our diets. Scientist believe that most of the contamination comes from water bottles and microplastics. Scientists estimated that over 12 million tons of plastic are entering the ocean each year. This is equivalent to one garbage truck of plastic dumping into the ocean each minute. Sherri Mason studied 12 different types…
