Moral Hazard Essay
Throughout the 20th century, our views of life dealing with insurance have drastically changed. It all started off so small and as each year progressed, insurance companies have steadily increased and made profit with money. Insurance companies continue to remain a mystery to people of how they make their money. Now in the 21st century, Insurance companies have definitely taken advantage of their two most important sources of selling insurance and making money. Insurance companies make money from premiums collected from their customers and their earnings from investing in those premiums they started. Furthermore, as everyone knows, Insurance companies happen to charge customers a monthly premium for their actual services. This definitely shows that by this way it is easy to show …show more content…
Insurance companies make their money from their monthly premiums and investment returns. One of the main expenses for any insurance company is covering the loss for an individual, firm, place, etc. As a business it is known that Insurance companies identify the client before actually letting them use their services to see if they could come out to make a profit. A key risk factor that is known today is Moral Hazard. Moral hazard is unbalanced asymmetric information. Insurance companies control Moral Hazards by offering a way for the insured person or party to pay something small for the services they have to prevent them from using it frequently. For example, with the health insurance markets, Insurance companies will allow the individual to use their services but they will have to pay a co-pay and deductible so that the costs will not be raised even more for the insurer. Insurance acts as intermediary between buyer and provider and has no incentive to provide a better price or higher quality. This is especially true in the movement from the medical model to the business model of health care. “The United States spends more on healthcare than any other country in the world, in 2008 US healthcare costs were 2.3 trillion or 7,000 per capita. The US per capita cost is 45% greater than our northern neighbor Canada, and 33% greater than Norway”. (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 2011). The business model is profit based. Requiring a profit almost always includes streamlining of services and mandating cost controls. Both of which limit the insured’s access to services, drugs, and new technology.…

Prior to the ACA there were numerous issues regarding health care in the Unites States. One of those issues was adverse selection. Adverse selection is an issue that has been prevalent to insurance of all kinds, especially health insurance. Adverse selection occurs when sellers have information that buyers don’t or vice versa. In the health insurance field it occurs when people make insurance purchase decisions based off their knowledge of their insurability or the likelihood they will make a claim. This can happen in a variety of ways. For example, the applicant might have information about the risk that is not known to the insurer, or the insurer might have access to the information but be unable to incorporate it fully into the price of coverage, due to factors such as antidiscrimination laws or the limitations of the insurer’s rating system. In order to fight adverse selection, insurance companies try to reduce exposure to large…

What is Moral Hazard? In economics, moral hazard is the lack of incentive to guard against risk when one is protected from its consequences. As an example, we can use the recent events leading to the market crash. Banks were issuing loans to people knowing it was not in their best interest, which lead to default loan and the subsequent decline of the housing market. So, how does moral hazard affect healthcare managers in today's healthcare market? Let us look at health care insurance as a prime example. Many young adults feel they don't need health insurance because they are young and healthy. Emergency rooms also have to treat the uninsured which means that even if they don’t have insurance they will always get treated. If the cost of care is beyond your means to afford it then taxpayers foot the bill, in the form of increased health care costs. The same reason you buy car insurance to protect yourself from the “what if”, the same applies to your health as a “what if” scenario could happen that finds you in the hospital.…

Kindness for most is something that is longed for. It is essential in the development of character in a person. In the play “Death of a Salesman” Biff Lowman tries to forge his destiny so that he can have some meaning in his life. However the lack of support he has from those around him is replaced by criticism and judgement even by his family. This leads readers to assume that a lack of kindness towards an individual may result the individual to lose confidence in themselves and allow others to lead the course of their life. Such is the case with Biff. He suffers from a conflict with his father Willy. Biff’s failure to appease Willy’s expectations leads him to reside in the days of his past, where all his glories were achieved. By doing so, WIlly opens up a world of criticism and judgement as well as misconception towards himself; and this follows with Biff straining to lead a life where he cannot be happy, as he chooses to live to save his father, or create himself.…

The intention of this essay is to discuss and assess the morality of cheating when one is in a serious relationship. I will be referencing case number 22, which deals with the ethics of cheating in a relationship. My opinion on the matter is that it is morally unacceptable for an individual involved in a serious relationship to cheat. To defend this position that I have taken, I will address the individual rights of both members of the relationship, make use of analogies and consider objections from the opposing view. While some relationships are not victims of the cheating plague, it is a rising concern for many couples as it appears that the temptations, opportunities and avenues to cheat are very present in today's society.…
