MORALITY, KNOWLEDGE, AND RELIGION

The Father of the American Revolution, Samuel Adams, said that to change any age in which we live, "we must simply 'study and practice the exalted virtues of the Christian system.' While the people are virtuous,' he said, "they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader . . . If virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great Security." (Contending for the Constitution, Beliles and Anderson, 2005, Providence Foundation).1 The group and caliber of the men, the delegates, who became the signers of the Constitution were extremely well-educated men. Twenty-nine of them were either graduates of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, or other prestigious universities. They were either lawyers, clergyman, and many were both attorneys and either clergy or heavily involved in the church. Some had fought in the War for Independence and about "three quarters of them had already served in the Continental Congress." (Id at 17). These were men for whom the love of God, the honor of country, and rule of law and principles of virtue were of utmost significance. They believed that morality, knowledge, and religion were essential to the formation of the colonies as "free and independent states." These were the tenets upon which they had built their lives, as soldiers, as barristers, as statesmen and clergymen. Descended from heavily Puritan roots, these were not liberal men; they harked back to their Puritanical roots in the way they dressed, acted, talked, and reasoned. Without the moral structure of spiritual law, the Founding Fathers knew that the newfound liberty afforded to Americans in the Constitution would be abused.     Hofstadter Summary: "The Founding Fathers: The Age of Realism" Summary of Section: I The reasoning behind the Constitution of the United States is presented as "based upon the philosophy of Hobbes and the religion of Calvin. It assumes the natural state of mankind in a state of war, and that the carnal mind is at enmity with God." Throughout, the struggle between democracy and tyranny is discussed as the Founding Fathers who envisioned the Constitution in Philadelphia in 1787 believed not in total democracy, but instead saw common man as selfish and contemptuous, and therefore in need of a "a good political constitution to control him."     Christian you made some very valid points in your essay that I will like to point out. First, you stated that there is not a clear cut separation of church in state in the United States constitution. I agree with you there is not an underlining separation between the two (church and state). As you read the language of the constitution you notice that there are religious foundations at the root of this document. It is evident that Religion was very important to the founding fathers because they included religious principles in all of the country’s important documents. In George Washington’s Farewell speech he stated that morals and religion both play a major role in politics, law, and government. He stated that without religion it would be hard to trust anyone who swears under an oath of the law. Washington also made the point that a good politician in a position such as leadership should possess good morals and a religious foundation. Washington began to close the speech with saying that he did his absolute best in leading the country in his two terms that he served. He stated that the whole purpose of his farewell address was to leave a record behind that the country could refer to in the future if these issues arise.     Starting in the early 1600’s English settlers began migrating to the Americas in search for liberty and the right to govern themselves in what they deemed a Christian manner. Thomas Morton, was one of the first to write about the Indians of New England. He condemned their religious beliefs claiming it was similar to devil like worship. (VOF,4) The Native Americans were seen to be living a much happier life even without religion, law and a king. This daunted Christian and they did not understand how this could be. It’s written that they claim their prosperity was full of evil and they would lead a happier life once bought to Christianity.(VOF,6) I feel this is the last America sees of true religious freedom. In reality, religious liberty existed in very few parts of the Atlantic world in during this time period. Most nations outlawed religious groups that rulers deems dangerous or disruptive. Cecilius Calvert was a Catholic who wished to demonstrate that Protestants and Catholics could live in peace, something that was not seen in Europe. In 1649 Maryland established an Act Concerning Religion, which introduced religious tolerance, saying that anyone who troubled a Christian due to their religion would be punished.(VOF,27) I feel this allowed others to safely demonstrate “religious freedom”, but this is just one state among the colonies. During this time it was rare to have this type of true freedom. Like many settlers, the puritans came to American in search of liberty, and to govern themselves in what they deemed a Christian manner.(VOF,29) This is where Religious freedom loses the sense of freedom, because the puritans created their own definition of the word freedom.
