Everybody experiences mortality in some point in their life. Nobody doesn't undergo it. But, a good deal of people have lost a family member or friend. Some people may have it worse than others. When you lose somebody that is important to you, you start to feel hopeless and depressed with their passing.
Mortality is greatly outlined in the play Hamlet. The main person that experiences mortality in diverse ways is Hamlet. In the beginning young Hamlet is grieving over his father who died suddenly. Soon after he meets his father’s ghost who tells him that he was killed by his brother. With this information, Hamlet becomes really depressed. King Claudius married his mother. After this, Hamlet wants to die himself. In the last act there is a lot of main characters that have exposure with mortality. Claudius plots to murder Hamlet. …show more content…
Laertes is blinded by rage from his sister’s death and agrees to fence Hamlet with a poisoned sword. Eventually all three die and spend their dying moments either in pain or telling others their regrets. When faced with mortality a lot of people act differently, some may accept it and some may not. I feel like people that are guilty or have no accepted their fate are crazed in their last moments. Whilst people who have accepted their fate, die peacefully.
Many people experience mortality.
I have personally lost a lot of family members throughout my life. One of the people that I have lost who was close to me, was my grandma. She was one of my greatest role models as I grew up. When she died January 28th on my birthday I was heartbroken. Other than dying on a day that was supposed to be happy, she was my grandma, and she was gone. When someone close to you die, a little bit of you goes with them. A large amount of people never feel the same after it. After my uncle took his own life in 2007, my dad's family has never been restored to their former mental wellness. We moved closer to my grandparents to help them, and it didn't help much. I have an older brother that saw my uncle as a brother and loved him to death. He didn't take it very well and rebelled against the
family.
Although examples may not be literal, there are a few symbols of death in Hamlet as the entire play revolves around it. Hamlet's ghost is a symbol of mortality as it is a product of death. It is used to motivate Hamlet to further investigate the circumstances upon which his father died. While he did prove his father’s ghost right, he also caused his own death. When Hamlet died it made the whole plot pointless. After going through all of the heartache and trials of losing his father and subsequently his mother, it all ends. Fortinbras ends up being the King of Denmark which I feel like teaches an important lesson. If you are patient, it is more rewarding than if you are brash and try to fight through everything. Both Fortinbras and Hamlet had their fathers taken away from them. The difference is that Fortinbras thought about things and waited until the time was opportune to strike. Hamlet could have made his life easier by having a plan to gain the kingdom back from King Claudius.
In conclusion, I feel like everyone has a right to be depressed or sad if they lose a loved one. No matter what, you will experience it sometime in your life. It is devastating to you in the moment but it can build you up stronger than before. You shouldn’t be like Hamlet and rush into things without a plan. Try being like Fortinbras and hold out for the better days.
