Mosaic Mosaic History
Mosaic in Florida Mosaic is one of the largest producers of phosphate and potash for growing crop minerals. The company is a fortune 500 business, based in Plymouth, Minnesota, that became incorporated in 2004. Mosaic products for crop growers are sold to retailers, wholesalers, and individual crop producers, in over 40 countries. Its is the “single source supplier of phosphate and potash” (Reuters 1). The company's main phosphate production is operated in central Florida with production of up to 17.2 million tons of rock in four of its mines alone. Mosaic also operates mines in Canada, around the United States, and additionally has plants in Brazil for distribution in South America and Asia. Brand names of some of the company’s products …show more content…
The mining company does have a history of the concerns prior to what it amassed in August of 2016. Mosaic has had issues with sinkholes in the past and should have been aware of the risk of mining in an area known for the appearance of these sinkholes. In 1994, a sinkhole formed very close to the one that formed in August, 2016 and Mosaic was advised to fix the issue. Required to put monitoring equipment on the “704-acre gyp stack”, Mosaic should have been fully aware of what conditions to observe when a crater is forming. Then in 2004 and 2013, Mosaic found that erosion was happening that eventually required extensive repairs to the site. Craig Pittman’s article in the February 10, 2017 Tampa Bay Times, mentioned that two retired hydrologists stated that, “alarm bells should have been going off-danger, danger” (Pittman 1). The company knew that the aquifer levels increased up to 40 feet, and per the experts, that should have been a warning sign that something was amiss. An investigation by the company’s own experts should have looked into the changes. Had the company

Who is responsible for this you ask? Majority feel the blame was that of Medill and his administrators as well as the Federal and State government. Others feel Scanlan could have done more to prevent this disaster after all he did have authority to shut the mine down. I will identify and explain four logistical alternatives Scanlan could have addressed, Analyze and discuss Scanlan’s motivation toward the Constitution (the law), bureaucracy (as a public administrator responsible to the public), and obligation and discuss different actions that Scanlan could have taken.…

The Centralia Mine opened in 1907 and remained free of fatal accidents for decades (Walker, 2006). By the 1940’s mine inspectors began reporting excessive coal dust in the mines and also provided recommendations. In March 25, 1947, the Centralia No. 5 coal mine exploded near the town of Centralia, Illinois, killing 111 people. The explosion was caused when an under burdened explosive detonation ignited coal dust. The explosion of this mine should not have been a surprise to anyone. Driscoll Scanlan, who was a state mine inspector, notified public sector safety professionals from state and federal agencies of the hazards as a result of inspections. There were also union complaints and letters to state officials. Various officials of mine safety agencies and the mine company were notified on more than one occasion. Scanlan as well as the mine’s union had also pushed to have the hazards corrected. The lack of the federal and state officials to take action, along with the ignition of built up coal dust, resulted in the death of 111 coal miners.…

It is with my deepest regret to have to announce to you today, August 5, 2010, that one of our copper mines has experienced a collapse and has left 33 miners trapped approximately 300 meters underground. Currently we are working with rescuers to locate the miners and determine their condition and the conditions of the area they are trapped in. Once we make contact with them we will drill several six-inch holes to supply them with supplies, such as food, water, fresh air, medical supplies, and communications to aid in sustaining their health conditions until we are able to bring them above ground.…

Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The painting is done in a realistic approach yet is not set in a specific place further enhancing the dream like quality meant to promote spiritual communication and enlightenment. This interpretation is about the balance between the countryside and mans attempt to conquer it brought to life in the form of a painting by Fan Kuan. In the painting the small humans are engulfed by the enormous mountains giving the effect of unattainability, yet the human spirit to conquering the elements arises out of the need explore. The human and animals traveling through the stream give the…

In terms of logistical alternatives there are a few things mine inspector Driscoll Scanlan could have suggested in order to better inspect the mines. Scanlan could have submitted more detailed reports that could have explained why the mines and working conditions were such a danger. Documentation is not only an effective logistical tool; it also helps promote accountability and addresses all of the issues that need to be resolved. In this particular case the safety of the mines, problems related to it and the mine’s operations and/or incidents all needed to be documented. Documentation could have aided the miners themselves because they would be made aware and would be better informed regarding how to safely do their jobs. The location that the mine was in made mine safety and awareness especially important. Along with Illinois’s abandoned mines come some of the worst underground mine fires in the country (Memmi 2000).…

Impressionism can be said to be one of the first modern art movement in painting as started and developed in Paris in the period of 1860. Its influence was significant as it spread in Europe and the United States. These artists were turning away from the old artistic impressions of fine finish and detail that inspired most artists at that time.…

The native American Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has a legitimate concern. These particular grounds have been under their influence for hundreds of years. This tribe along with many other have the right to express their concern. It is not uncommon for Native American tribes to live off land immediately within their proximity. If the water was to be contaminated it would have dire consequences for this tribe and many others. It would probably be safe to assume many burial sites and locations of worship would be disturbed as well. Any self-respecting corporations would recognize this dilemma immediately and take the appropriate actions to mitigate collateral damage, public scrutiny and most the degradation of a prideful…
