At the beggining of the story when Stacy whent and gave her grandmother a big hug and kiss, she did it because she thought it would be nice to give her an American welcome. Instead of accepting the hug and kiss, her grandmother was shocked and told Stacy that "nice children don't drool on people." At this point, the tension between them was already starting to build because of this gesture that was supposed to be nice. This was cunfusing for Stacy because she did not understand that her grandmother had good intentions and only wanted to protect her. Stacy was hurt because her grandmother's sudden fustraition when she was trying to be nice. She did not know that in her grandmothers culture, similar ribbons were used to reshape a girls feet to look more beautiful and that it is a very painful process. However, Stacy doesn't know her grandmothers past, what she had to go through, and why she had responded the way she did. This could have been avoided if her grandmother had handled the situation better by explaining to Stacy why the ribbons made her so uncomfortable and
