Very few fictional characters created long ago have remained popular to this very day. However, one specific literary character has remained to be, if not increasingly so, popular in the modern time. Sherlock Holmes created by Arthur Conan Doyle nearly 160 years ago is unique, widely appealing, intriguing and slightly strange, unlike many other characters that have appeared in books in the nineteenth century and later. As well as his charisma, Sherlock’s intelligence, almost inhumanly so, is what sets him apart from the rest. Sherlock could notice small details about a person’s dress or demeanor that could tell him a lot about that person. He uses his brain more than anything else. Many believe that this is the reason for the great appeal, because anyone could be him. Another factor in Sherlock’s popularity is the fact that he’s a rebel. What teenager, or anyone for that matter, doesn’t love a rebel? In The Adventure of the Three Students Holmes is given the case of figuring out who snuck into the Greek professor’s, Hilton Soames, office and copied the answers for the examination. Sherlock goes to investigate the scene and has the ability to draw large conclusions from the smallest of observations. He finds pencil shavings a small triangle of black putty on the floor, and a scratch on the table. Sherlock and his partner Watson then pose as tourists and visit each of the three students’ rooms to investigate further. In the end, he pieces it together that Gilchrist is the one who stole the answers. Holmes explains that Gilchrist runs track, which explains the clump of clay left behind. His cleats also were the reason for the scratch on the table. Gilchrist also owned a pencil that left the shavings at the scene. This is what makes the Sherlock Holmes series so compelling. The books are so unique because they’re told by a third-person point of view without reducing the influence or importance of the main character. Although the cases seem difficult and full of tricks, Sherlock proves them to be quite simple and have a good twist. Each story is different showing that a good detective does not need to deal with murder and murder again every single time. Sherlock lives an experimental and adventurous life and this lifestyle allows him to be the extraordinary character that he is. His freedom to experiment helps him test out theories and keep his mind sharp. The 19th-Century creation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the crime-solver who employs wit and logical reasoning has been the most portrayed fictional character in film history. Today, the popularity of Sherlock Holmes is known all over the world. “Elementary, my dear Watson,” is a catchphrase that needs no citation. Sherlock Holmes is, and has always been, nothing less than a phenomenon.
