At eighteen, she left her home and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish nuns who held missions in India. After months of training in Dublin she was sent back to India, where on May 24th 1931 Mother Teresa took her vows as a nun. From then on until 1948 she taught at St. Mary's High School in Calcutta.
Outside the walls of St. Mary's were suffering families held in poverty which would make a huge impression on Mother Teresa and in 1948 help her receive permission to leave the convent and devote herself to working amongst the poor and slums in Calcutta.
Without funds, Mother Teresa started free schooling for the children within the slums. Soon after volunteers and financial support rolled in and made it possible for her to continue her duty elsewhere.
On October 7th 1950, Mother Teresa was granted permission by the Holy See to start her order known as "The Missionaries of Charity". The missionaries would focus on loving and caring for those persons which nobody cared for. In 1965 the group was declared an International Religious Family by Pope Paul VI.
Societies have now spread throughout the world, including the former USSR, Latin America and others, to provide help to the poorest of the poor and do relief work after natural catastrophes. The order also has houses though out the modern world to help care for shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless and AIDS sufferers.
"The Missionaries of Charity" became assisted by Co-Workers which number over one million in more than 40 countries worldwide. Together the team tries to bring the same hope, spirit and charisma Mother Teresa brought before.
Mother Teresa died on September 5th, 1997.
