‘Mother to Son’ is an ecstatic poem composed by Langston Hughes. The poem is structured in a form of a conversation between a mother and her son. Hughes assures her son that her life wasn’t crystal stair, she also had to face several struggles in her life. Hence, she commands her son not to look back and keep climbing higher in life even if he thinks climbing is hard. He should try not to fall and climb the stairway of success without any fear because his mother is still climbing with power, faith and strength. In the poem, Langston Hughes urges her son to stay strong and never give up, what so ever the situation is.

She decided to portray the entire poem in the form of texts along with the pictures. In my opinion, the video could not present the emotions of the poem because the viewers could hardly figure out the wordings and relate to the background music. The video by Reed Dorty was similar, but unlike Tapia, Dorty presented the poem in the form of a narration. However, his representation of the poem had no music. Vinetta Sample presented a similar narration, except she narrated the poem in front of an audience. All these videos weren’t able to move the viewers much since they had no music not could their respective narrations showed any emotion which the poem portrayed. Videos by Donnett Marie Taffe and Charles Williams showcased the best meaning of the poem. The videos have a perfect blend of background music, narration and emotions. Taffe in her video, conveyed her emotions and understanding of the poem through her excellent acting skills.
However, according to me, the video which delivered the message of the poem best was the musical demonstration by Charles Williams. It featured a musical performance by Charles Williams, which was supported by Tom Teasley and his blues inspired performance on the melodica. Williams’ narration and Tom’s music moves the viewers with correct emotions and allow them to relate to the poem. This flawless amalgamation of music, fine oral delivery
