The poem is told from the point of view of a wise mother talking to her son about how to get through the hard times in life. This woman compares life to a set of stairs. The first few lines of the poem states, “Well, son, I’ll tell you: Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” The purpose of these lines is to let people know that life will never be as easy as it is made out to be. Sometimes you need to have thicker skin to get through the worst times in life. One line in the poem states, “Don't you fall now- For I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” Nevertheless, even though life may not go accordingly you shouldn’t give up. People should always attempt to strive through the hard times in life. People do not realise that there could be more to look forward to and they would want to give up. One path has clearly been used by many and one seemed as if it was almost never touched. The poem states, “Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear…” This proves that the narrator was having an inner conflict. They did not know whether to take the path that everybody else had taken or the newer one few have walked. I have concluded the paths represent a decision. The person is facing a decision they are hesitant to make because not many have chose it. They are facing the fear of regret and mistakes. “Everyone has to make their own decisions. I still believe in that. You just have to be able to accept the consequences without complaint.(Grace Jones)” Even though you may be afraid of making a mistake, you shouldn’t let that hold you back because you have potential. Even if the conclusion of your choice doesn’t go as planned, it is okay because you should be proud you had the courage to make that decision. I appreciate the ending of this poem because the person has become stronger than their fears and they took the path they felt was right. It states this in stanza four, “...I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” I feel they are proud of the decision hey have made because the way the poem ends seems like the
