Since the industrial revolution in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, coal has become more available and the potential to exploit the material, along with other resources, has been great. Coal is a finite resource that is non-renewable and thus running out as the population of MEDCs still require coal for power stations and to produce electricity and as LEDCs industrialize and become more developed they too increase their demand for the resource. This is not helped by the increasing global population, causing many more problems and magnifying existing issues, e.g. global warming.…

The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers (definitions.net). A career in coal mining requires specific skills and training, offers common compensation and benefits, and has an expected career path and opportunity for advancement.…

ABSTRACT: In this study, a linear programming model is developed to determine the optimum coal blend in terms of quality and quantity. Coal with various features is mined from different panels of Seyitömer Lignite Coal District and fed to a nearby power plant. The quality of the coal is extremely variable through the horizontal and vertical directions, which entails the precise planning of coal blending during the mining and stockpiling stages. Otherwise, a large penalty has to be paid to the power plant. In this study, the objective is to match the calorific values required by the power plant. The quality features and production capacities of coal from different panels are determined and are used in quality constraints. The power plant requires coal in two groups, which are of different qualities and quantities. Therefore, two linear programming models complementing each other are developed in order to determine the blending conditions that satisfy the needs of the plant. The models are introduced and solved m the LINDO package program. Reasonable solutions are obtained and optimal amounts of blending are handled. The model also allows the evaluation of coal panels of low quality.…

Coal is highly abundant compared to oil and natural gas. Some analysts predict that the use of coal will increase as oil supplies decline. The coal supplies that we have now could last up to 200 years or longer. Undeveloped countries can not afford oil and natural gas so they depend on coal as their main source of energy. Coal is usually mined. The less expensive method of mining is surface mining; it produces the majority of coal in the United States. Surface mining is the act of stripping the top soil and layers of rock up to 200 feet underground to come in contact with coal. Once the coal is removed from the pit, miners return the dirt and rock to the pit and replant the vegetation. Another form of mining is in which miners ride elevators up to 1,000 feet below surface to an underground mine. Machines then dug out the coal and then the coal was brought out using rails and rail carts. This method of mining was called underground mining or deep mining. Before the coal is shipped out it is mined and processed. Shipping coal can actually cost more than mining it itself. The many ways of transporting coal includes by train, barge, ship, truck, and even by pipeline. When coal is transferred through pipelines, it…
