1. Background
Lisbon is a city with over half a million inhabitants, an average temperature of 17°C and with barely any rain. Combine these factors with the kilometers of traffic jams a day and the city seems ripe for our concept: taxis on two wheels.
It is a simple concept really, to use bikes you avoid the traffic jams. This means you can cover more kilometers, transport more people and thus make more money while charging the client less.
2. The taxi
a) Target group
It is obvious that our mototaxis are able to take one passenger only. This is why we stay located in the city and not outside of it. Our desired target group is mainly the 100.000 students in the city, business people who are in a desperate need of avoiding the traffic jams (time is money), and whoever desires to be somewhere fast or enjoy the delights of a bike trip. We require a minimum age of 12 years for passengers and people with mental or physical restrains will not be accepted.
b) The equipement
In order for the passenger to feel comfortable and secure, we have chosen the Vespa 125
LX model as our mototaxis. The model is slim enough to avoid traffic jams. All bikes will have the same striking orange color, so future passengers can easily recognize our mototaxi. The bike riders will be required to use a helmet and a uniform, again of the same striking orange color.
All bikes will have a small trunk, in case the client carries some luggage.
c) The staff and recruitment
The bike riders will be required to be minimum 21 years old and at least two years of driver experience. We expect mainly students to offer their skills, though we will exclude no one when presenting themselves. Since we will start with fifty bikes and we have three shifts a day, we will need 150 bikers. Other staff will consist of people managing all the logistics and paperwork and answering the phone, etc.
d) Comparing the bike with the car
The first thing we have to check when
