Mount Ebott Analysis
The background of the game is based around the history between the two ruling races of the land: Humans and Monsters. A war had broken out between the two and after many battles, the Humans were victorious. The Monsters were sent to the underground while the Humans ruled the surface. The only thing that divided the two races was a barrier, but it was unreliable. The only point of entrance was from a mountain called Mount Ebott.

Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 film Pan’s Labyrinth is about a little girl, Ofelia, who moves with her mother to live with her new stepfather, Captain Vidal. Ofelia comes to learn that she is princess of the Underworld and, with the help from faeries, must complete magical tasks in order to escape Earth and her cruel stepfather and return to her throne in the mystical world (Pan’s Labyrinth). Del Toro’s main purpose of this film is to parallel the monsters and tasks Ofelia must overcome to fascist 1940s Spain (Kermode). However, with deeper analysis, the monsters may also represent universal societal issues such as mistreatment of the poor by the wealthy, the premature death of childhood innocence and wonder, and abuse. Del Toro’s monsters in Pan’s…

In the first chapter of Outliers: The Matthew Effect, author Malcolm Gladwell introduces research done in showing that society has a unique way in perceiving success. He provides evidence of an uncontrollable source such as birthdates being a large factor in success by presenting the reader with charts. The author also tells of how children perceived as successful at a young age will continue to get ahead during life. The overabundance of proof shown in the text shows that the author has done an immense amount of research on this topic. Author Malcolm Gladwell effectively builds his argument of the connection of success to uncontrollable factors by appealing to the reader’s emotions, giving proof of research done by professionals, and giving…

This installation was site-specific and was constructed in a precise alignment. Up and Under is made up of four interconnected tunnels that snake through the earth. All four tunnels are aligned according to the North Star. When visitors stand in the middle mound, all four tunnels align while the tunnel above directs their view to the sky. Up and Under was developed out of Holt’s interest in sight and vision. Small amounts of soil and earth were collected from towns all over Finland and were mixed together directly beneath the tunnels. This gave a conceptual aspect to the installation and grounded the sculpture in its location. This particular installation resides in Finland and took nearly a decade to…

What Plato is trying to teach with The Allegory of the cave is that things that we learn through the senses are not always the truth and people are too close-minded to try to see things in a different light. In Plato’s theory the cave represents that people believe that only things you can see or hear are true or real. The cave shows how these people are trapped in there misunderstanding of reality. The Shadows represent the mistruths presented as reality in the world. The game represents that people can measure their intelligence based on their understanding of misinformation and that the people who do so truly know nothing of reality. The escape of the prisoner represents the quest for truth and knowledge beyond the senses and the journey of the soul that is experienced through revelations or stepping from “the darkness” into “the light”. The return represents the want of people who gain knowledge to share it with those who don’t have it and need it, and the shock from those who may not…
