Helens, a stratovolcano, is located in Southwestern Washington. It is ranked 5 on the explosivity index. The eruption at Mount St. Helens was triggered by an earthquake that occurred at 8:32 am on the eighteenth of May, 1980. Scientists had been monitoring seismic activity for months before the eruption. When the volcano erupted, over 230 square miles were within the direct blast of the eruption. All 230 miles were completely totaled. Hot mud, which was moving at over 90 miles per hour, which cleared away everything that was in its path. The volcano, which used to be a symmetrical cone that stood at about 9,600 feet tall, is now horseshoe shaped and only stands at 8,300 feet tall. The landscape has been permanently altered since that day. More than 200 homes were destroyed in the blast. Over 185 miles of roads and over 15 miles of railways were also destroyed. Ash was blasted out of the volcano at over 650 miles per hour. Nearly 540 million tons of that ash drifted and settled over 2,220 square miles, reaching across seven states before finally ending in Minnesota. The cost to repair all of the damage caused by the eruption cost well over 1.1 billion dollars. It is considered to be the most destructive volcano in the United…

During the 1700s, the regions of New England and the Chesapeake experienced dramatic changes and stimulated development due to the increase in immigration from Europe to this new world of the Americas. The immigrants that came to the New England colony differed in terms of reasons for coming and differences in ways of establishing a foundation for the society verses the Chesapeake colony. The differentiating motives, interactions between the natives, and the formation of the structure of society created the differences in development between these two distinct societies.…

Covering over 85% of Hawaii, Mauna Loa meaning long mountain, is the earth's largest volcano. Located on the main island of Hawaii, Mauna Loa pushes 12 million cubic meters of lava into Hawaii each day. It rises over 4 km above sea level. But, below the sea, it drops another 5km to the sea floor which is then indented another 8km under the weight of this giant land form. This means the total height of this volcano is a whooping 17km high from the base of the volcano to the crest. It is amid the earth's most currently active volcanos with its most recent eruption in 1984 being both extremely beautiful and destructive. It has been documented erupting 33 times between 1843 and 1984 at 5-6 year intervals and scientists currently expect an eruption…
In Lord of The Flies by William Golding, A Tale of Two Cites by Charles Dickens, and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer people in power use their position to corrupt others. This suggests people should be mindful who they put in power. In these novels the authors show that no matter what age, race, social status, or even gender a person is, if given some-kind of power and competition they have the potential to become corrupt. Also, these three writings demonstrate that fear gives the ability to control people or a person.…
To begin with, the first reason I choose to bike up Mount Shasta is because it is located in Northern California. According to the website US Climate Data, the local high temperature of Mount Shasta during July is 83 degrees fahrenheit and the low average in Mount Shasta is 49 degrees fahrenheit, which limits the chances of snow in that area. This is because the website Answers.com states that it must be below 37 degrees fahrenheit. This is why I would choose July to mountain bike up Mount Shasta.…

My love affair with Mount Holyoke began quite innocuously, as many loves do. Exactly two years ago I received some mailings from the college—I originally began liking the school because of my intended major. However, in the last two years, I have found all the more reasons to deepen my adoration of Mount Holyoke College. The liberty of a liberal arts education will not only allow me to focus on my intended major but will also allow me to broaden my horizons to discover new areas of interest. My academic career at Mount Holyoke will be a drastic change from my high school career. Studying at Mount Holyoke College would be similar to discovering new land. I would arrive with purpose: the study of language will be my Plymouth Rock, my joy, but…
