Mountains Beyond Mountains Mission Statement

Harvard’s Pre-College class called AIDS, Ebola, and Earthquakes: The Fight to save the World, sparked an interest in Global and/or Public Health for me. Ever since I was little, I have known that I would like to work in the medical field. After attending several programs that allow young adults to explore the Medical Field, the more aware I became that my research skills could be rendered useful. While continuing to search for possible careers, I researched the mission statements of both Global and Public Health. Consistently throughout my research, I found the statements such as “expand community’s knowledge on personal and population health” and “employ strategies to improve the overall health of the community.” In order to be able to be a part of these missions, pursuing a degree at Harvard University would allow me to expand my educational repertoire. This will ultimately allow me the ability to give back to the community and have a positive impact on individual’s lives.
Mountains Beyond Mountains is a biography on Dr. Paul Farmer with an emphasis on his work in the third-world country, Haiti. The biography depicts how Dr. Paul Farmer balances his time between affording the lifestyle he wants to live and following his passion of helping individuals who are in need. The purpose of college is to pursue a degree in order to get a career doing what an individual loves. Part of the reason I was moved by Mountains Beyond Mountains was because I strive to live a life similar to Dr. Paul Farmer. His passion of wanting to make a positive difference in underprivileged countries, such as Haiti, has made a significant impact on me. Therefore, I hope to apply my knowledge gained through my college education to follow my passion of helping others, while still affording me the lifestyle I choose to
