In this mouse model (Fig 1 A-C), brief periods of gasping and shallow respirations, a decrease in breathing rate or transient termination of breathing before resuming a normal respiration define as loss of consciousness (unconscious). Our results indicated that an impact caused a short-term unconsciounsness (7.5±4.7, 7.8±5.5, 10.2±8.8, 9.5±8.0 sec at each impact separately) (Fig 1D). During the impactions, no mouse showed skull fractures, subarachnoid, epidural or subdural hemorrhage. H&E staining of the brain sections were histologically normal and showed no remarkable tissue disorganization, or subdural or interstitial hemorrhage in the cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum and brain stem (Fig 2A).
